Mobile BayBears News Release

Mobile, Ala. – The Mobile BayBears starter Chris Oxspring was impressive again as he struck out 11 Jacksonville batters as Mobile defeated the Suns, 8-2, in front of 2,132 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Oxspring (2-2) earned his second straight win working five innings and allowing just two runs on five base hits. Thursday night was just the third start of the season for Oxspring, who has been outstanding in them all. In 14 combined innings he has allowed only two runs on 13 hits and has registered 21 strikeouts.

The BayBears scored single runs in the first and second innings on RBI's by Jake Gautreau and Humberto Quintero.

Jacksonville tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Tarrik Brock drove in Victor Diaz with a triple and scored on a double by Derek Michaelis.

Mobile got those runs right back in the bottom of the fourth, however. Danny Bravo crossed the plate as Quintero drove a ball to right field, which was misplayed by Roger Abercrombie and went for a three base error. Oxspring then drove in Quintero with a single to left field.

The BayBears put the game away in the bottom of the eighth off of Suns' reliever Dimas Reina. Mobile tacked on four runs as Reina allowed all of the runs on three hits, three walks and a wild pitch, giving the BayBears an 8-2 victory.

The BayBears and Suns will play game two of their five game series Friday night. Mobile LHP Cory Stewart (4-4; 3.58) will face Jacksonville's RHP Edwin Jackson (2-3; 2.64). As always on Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium there will be a fireworks spectacular following the game.

The BayBears want to remind everyone the San Diego Padres will be conducting a tryout at Hank Aaron Stadium on Saturday, June 21st.
