G-Braves Send Rays to Second Straight Loss in Rout

June 5, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Orlando Rays News Release

Greenville, S.C. — Orlando scored first and last in their game with Greenville Thursday, but the Braves did all the scoring in between, using an 18-hit attack to post 15 in the Braves' 15-4 route of the Rays in Southern League action Thursday.

Orlando jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first courtesy of a two-run homer by OF Matt Diaz, but the Orlando lead was short-lived as the Braves posted three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

O-Rays starter Jim Magrane (5-3) was tagged with the loss after the Braves chased him after the 3rd inning. Magrane was charged with eight runs – six earned – on 10 hits in 3.0 IP. He also walked two and struck out four in his shortest start of the season. Orlando also committed a pair of errors, pushing their SL-leading total to 78 on the season

Offensively not much else went right for the Rays, as they were limited to four runs on just eight hits. Diaz and Chairon Isenia had two RBI apiece for the Rays, while Dan DeMent's 2-4 night made him the only O-Ray with multiple hits.

Orlando and Greenville square off again tomorrow at 7:15 P.M., with RHP Doug Waechter (5-3, 3.80) taking the hill for Orlando. Greenville counters with LHP Chris Waters (1-0, 3.18). The Rays and Braves will play three more times in this series before the Rays return to Orlando for a four-game set with intra-state rival Jacksonville starting June 9.
