Owls Limp Into All-Star Break

Forest City, NC- Derek Vaughn came out and dominated the Forest City Owls over seven shutout innings. The righty led the Florence RedWolves to a 9-0 win at McNair Field Saturday night, handing the Owls their second straight shutout loss. Vaughn gave up just four hits and a walk, facing the minimum through his first six innings of work.

Jeff Gardner reached in all six of his plate appearances with a double, two singles and three walks. He scored three of Florence's runs. Kyle Martin went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI on a double and three singles. Joel Fisher picked up two doubles, 2 RBI and scored twice as part of the offensive onslaught.

Drake Thomason gave up the first six runs (four earned) on ten hits, the most allowed by an Owls starter this year. The righty did make it through six innings, but took his third straight loss after going 3-1 in his previous four starts. The Owls best chance at scoring came in the 7th inning against Vaughn. Bryan Aanderud and Nate Chong picked up back-to-back singles with one. Then, Alex Close walked to load the bases. Vaughn rallied and struck out Will Chandler and got Champ Rowland to ground out, ending the threat.

The Owls will have the next two days off for the All-Star Break. Several Owls will be taking place in the All-Star festivities, including Alex Close and Nate Chong participating in the Home Run Derby tomorrow. The Forest City Owls are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
