Chico Outlaws News Release

LONG BEACH, CA - The Long Beach Armada used two walks, an infield single and two hit batters to plate the tying and eventual winning runs in the bottom of the 7th inning and held on to nip the Chico Outlaws 4-3 Wednesday night at Blair Field in Long Beach, evening their three-game series and snapping the Outlaws seven game winning streak.

Long Beach opened the scoring in the 2nd inning as five straight Armada batters reached base against Chico starting pitcher Phil Springman...back-to-back bases loaded RBI singles by Chris Klemm and Bobby Castro staked the Armada's Ryan Claypool to an early 2-0 lead. The Outlaws answered back in the top of the 3rd, tying the score when Bobby Gandolfo's triple down the right field line plated Jesse Kovacs and Jason Matteucci. The game stayed deadlocked until the 6th, when Mike Mallory reached on a Randall Shelley error and eventually scored on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Todd Gossage, putting Chico in front 3-2.

Long Beach staged what proved to be the winning rally in the bottom of the 7th against the Outlaws newly-signed reliever Aaron Taylor - with a runner at second and two outs, Taylor plunked Jose Canseco and then Jeremy Hernandez followed with an infield single to load the bases. Taylor proceeded to walk Shelley to force home Ryan Stevenson with the tying run...then on the next pitch Taylor hit Cole Cicatelli to force home Canseco and put Long Beach on top 4-3. Claypool worked into the 9th inning, but left with two outs and the tying run aboard. Left-hander Chris Testa came in from the Armada bullpen to get Matteucci to fly out to right to end the game and give Long Beach the come-from-behind victory.

Claypool (4-2) allowed just two earned runs in eight-and-two-thirds innings to earn the win, with Testa picking up his second save of the season...Taylor (0-1) took the loss for Chico. The Armada outhit the Outlaws 9-4, with Hernandez leading the way with a 3-for-4 night. Wednesday's loss dropped Chico's record to 12-4 in the second half (34-22 overall); the Outlaws league lead slipping to three games with Fullerton's 8-6 win over Yuma. Long Beach improved to 7-9 in the second half and 29-27 on the year. Right-hander Brian Kroll (6-3) will be on the mound for Chico in Thursday's series rubber match...All-Star righty Justin Ramsey (6-2) is expected to start for the Armada. Game time is scheduled for 7:05pm.
