San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
SAN DIEGO - Derrick Pyles, a teammate of Victor Roldan at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, has joined the San Diego Surf Dawgs. Pyles hails from just outside the San Diego Area in Temecula, Calif.
In his senior season at Embry-Riddle, the right handed hitting and throwing Pyles led the team in batting average (.394), hits (91), RBI (59), total bases (128), and runs scored (61). His five triples and 16 stolen bases landed him second on the Eagles squad. Those accolades earned Pyles a first-team All-American nomination by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics this past June.
Pyles, 23, assembled a list of accolades this season, also being named 2006 NAIA Region XIV and Florida Sun Conference Player of the Year. Pyles, along with Roldan, were the only two players on the Eagles roster to start all 64 games this season. The pairing of Roldan and Pyles on the Surf Dawgs is the second pairing of college teammates on the team this season - Matt Maloney and Jeremy McCann both attended Gardner-Webb University.
He is a 2001 graduate of Temecula Valley High School and was born in San Clemente. At Embry Riddle, he was majoring in communications.
Pyles and the Dawgs will be on a six-game, eight-day road trip to Chico and Reno before returning home August 11-13 to take on the Fullerton Flyers. San Diego and first-place Chico will mix it up at Nettleton Stadium beginning tomorrow.
