North Iowa Outlaws News Release
(Mason City, IA) The North Iowa Outlaws Junior "A" Hockey team moved back to the .500 mark Saturday, following a 4-2 win over the Wasilla Spirit at the North Iowa Ice Arena. The victory also clinched a winning Outlaws' record for the month of October. With one game remaining this month, North Iowa's October mark stands at 8-6-0.
The Outlaws' power play did some damage against the Spirit. North Iowa converted on 3 of 10 power play opportunities. Matt Morin (Brooklyn Park, MN) broke a scoreless tie early in the second period, notching his second goal of the season, on assists from Max Mobley (Glendale, AZ) and Alex Tuckerman (Orleans, MA). Less than two minutes later, Mike Sand (Jeddo, MI) lit the lamp on the power play, to give the Outlaws a 2-0 lead. Brian Spring (Urbandale, IA) and Cody Mosbeck (Emo, Ontario, Canada) assisted on Sand's score. After Wasilla's Rich Leitner scored the first of his two goals on the night, Cory Ellertson (Albert Lea, MN) tallied an even-strength goal at 18:53, on assists from Alex Breeden (Fort Collins, CO) and Casey Dion (Colorado Springs, CO). Spring scored on the power play at 2:14 mark of the third period, to give the Outlaws some breathing room. Leitner's second goal of the game, at 3:27 of the final stanza, closed out the scoring.
Scott Darling (Lemont, IL) started his first game in goal for the Outlaws and played well, making 34 saves.
The win raised the Outlaws' record to 9-9-0 on the season. The two teams play again Sunday afternoon at 1:35, Central Standard Time at North Iowa Arena. Prior to Sunday's game, the Outlaws will be hosting a tailgate party outside North Iowa Arena, to benefit the American Red Cross, for hurricane relief. For a five dollar minimum donation, persons can enjoy pulled pork sandwiches, with all the trimmings. All of the proceeds from the tailgate party will go to the American Red Cross, to assist those affected by recent Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. The tailgate event begins at 11:30 AM, and will continue until game time, or until everyone is served.
