Denver Outlaws News Release

DENVER - The Denver Outlaws released its 23-Man Protected Roster for 2010 today, as was announced by team Head Coach and General Manager Brian Reese. Teams were required to submit their Protected Rosters to the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) front office by 10:00 a.m. MT on Monday, September 28. Outlaws players who were not on the protected list included veteran defenseman Tom Garvey (Johns Hopkins) and midfielders Josh Sims (Princeton) and Jeff Sonke (North Carolina). Garvey announced just over a month ago (August 28) that he was retiring from the organization and it appears as though Sims and Sonke will make the same decision.

"At this point, it looks as if Jeff and Josh will not be playing next year and will retire," said Reese. "None of these three players will be easy to replace though, as they are some of the best in the MLL. With that being said, I really like the talented players that will return next season," added Reese. "I am confident that some of these younger players can step into important roles for the Outlaws."

Garvey spent four seasons with the Outlaws and appeared in 51 games, including seven playoff games. He also collected 60 ground balls through his career and accumulated eight penalty minutes.

Sims is one of the league's original players from 2001 and spent his first five seasons with the Bayhawks before being acquired by the Outlaws in 2006. He's appeared in 16 playoff games as well, more than any player in MLL history. He also holds the all-time record for playoff goals with 29 and is tied for the most points in the post-season with 36 (tied with Roy Colsey). In 80 regular season games, Sims recorded 116 goals (15 two-point goals) and 57 assists for 188 points.

Sonke also began playing in 2001 and spent five years with Baltimore. He's seven all-time in regular season games played with 97 and has scored 144 goals. His 24 two-point goals place him third all-time in that category as well. In total, Sonke tallied 58 assists and 226 points in the regular season. Following only Sims in playoff experience, Sonke has played in 14 playoff games. During those runs at a MLL championship he scored 18 goals (three two-pointers) and added five assists.
