Outlaws Rally, Hold on over Scorpions

Yuma, AZ - The Chico Outlaws overcame an early 5-0 deficit and hung on for a 10-9 win over the Yuma Scorpions on Sunday night at Desert Sun Stadium.

The Scorpions jumped ahead early with one in the first and two in the second off of Chico starter Travis Kane. Carlos Leon had a two-run triple. They added single runs in the fourth and fifth, one coming on an RBI double by Beau Riportella.

Yuma starter Jon Huizinga was dominant through five, but ran into trouble in the sixth and seventh. Chico put up two in the sixth and then batted around in the seventh, scoring five runs to take a 7-5 lead. The inning was highlighted by an RBI triple by Jake Rife and a two-run double by Bobby Hill. Huizinga was removed with two out in the inning.

After Yuma added one in their half of the seventh to make it 7-6, Chico added three more in the eighth as they batted around again. The inning began with four consecutive doubles by Al Quintana, Jake Rife, Adam Buschini, and Oscar Sigala.

Yuma responded with three in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double by J.J. Muse. Jason Roenicke came on to relieve David Roberts and struck out Jared McDonald with the tying run on second.

Roenicke remained on for the ninth and retired the Scorpions, earning his first save of the season. Kane (1-0) picked up the win, allowing nine hits and five runs in six innings, with four walks and four strikeouts. Huizinga (0-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs in six and two-thirds innings.

The two teams play again on Monday night at Desert Sun Stadium. First pitch is 7:35 p.m. and the action can be heard on the Outlaws Baseball Network on Justin.tv.
