Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - It was one of those nights that everything clicked for the Chico Outlaws - quality pitching, consistent and timely hitting, and error-free defense - as the Outlaws downed the Long Beach Armada in front of more than 2,800 Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium...Chico winning back-to-back games for the first time this year.
38-year-old Greg Bicknell, making his first start of the season, was flawless through the first five innings, retiring all 15 Long Beach batters he faced. Chico provided him with plenty of offensive support, batting around and scoring four times in the 2nd inning off Armada starter Rik Currier. Todd Gossage started the rally with a one-out double to left...he then scored when Long Beach second baseman Cleatus Davidson bounced a throw to first on a Lino Garcia infield single. Gabe Riley followed with a walk, then Shane Cronin clubbed a 2-2 pitch over the right-center field fence...the three-run homer putting Chico out in front 4-0. The Outlaws would extend their lead with a run in the 4th (Jesse Kovacs delivering a two-out double to plate Riley) and another in the 5th (Garcia singling home Jose Valdez) to make the score 6-0.
Bicknell's no-hit bid ended with one out in the 6th when Julian Williams singled to left...Pedro Montero then singled to right...and following a groundout Ryan Lehr chopped a base hit up the middle to plate two and cut Chico's lead to 6-2. Trevor Caughey was summoned from the Outlaws bullpen to strike out Tony Torcato with two on and two out...then in the bottom of the 6th Chico got one of the runs back on a two-out double by Valdez and an RBI single by Julian Benavidez. The Outlaws bullpen took it from there - Caughey, Tyler Pearson and Rudy Quinonez retired the final 10 Armada hitters in succession...Quinonez struck out the side in the 9th to lock down the Chico victory.
Bicknell (1-0) struck out four in five-and-two-thirds innings to pick up the win...Currier (0-2) lasted only five innings and was beaten by Chico for the second time in eight days. The Outlaws rapped out 14 hits on the night - every starter had at least one hit, with Kovacs, Valdez, Benavidez, Garcia and Riley picking up two each. Saturday's win upped Chico's record to 3-9 on the season, while Long Beach dipped to 5-5 for the year. The Outlaws go for the sweep in the finale of the three game series Sunday - lefty Jason Roach will get the start for Chico...the Armada will counter with former big league right-hander Jerome Williams (2-0). Game time is 6:05pm...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play beginning at 5:40pm on ESPN 101.7 FM or AM 1340. The broadcast will also be streamed live on the internet through the Outlaws official website, www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
