Kansas City Outlaws News Release
They say elephants never forget. There doesn't seem to be any folklore about the memory of ice skating swine, but there should be. When the Kansas City Outlaws and Rockford IceHogs met last, the Outlaws skated away with a 1-0 shootout victory. The meeting before that, Kansas City skated to a 7-1 win. The Hogs, apparently, haven't forgotten. Tonight Rockford stepped into Kemper Arena and made off with a 4-2 victory.
The Outlaws started the game strong, taking an early 1-0 lead on Joe Seroski's 30th goal of the year. Smokin Joe beat Rockford goaltender Michel Robinson just 44 seconds into the first period. Jason Ruff and Mark Lee picked up the assists.
The worm turned pretty quickly, as the IceHogs scored a pair of first period goals. Eric Labelle scored at 3:10, and Alex Kim's power play goal at 10:27 gave Rockford the 2-1 lead.
Kansas City had a golden opportunity in the second period, when Rockford's Terry Harrison was whistled for obsctruction at with 6:14 remaining. Unfortunately, IceHog Jason Ralph broke free and picked up a shorthanded goal at 14:20, increasing the Rockford lead to 3-1.
The Outlaws struck back in the final frame, as Mark Lee scored just 1:08 into the third period. Lee was assisted by Jason Ruff and Matt Suderman.
With the Outlaws fighting to tie things up and send the game to a shootout, Rockford's Chris Gobert scored a controversial unassisted goal with 1:23 remaining. As Kansas City's Ruslan Borysenko carried the puck out of the Outlaws' zone, a Rockford player appeared to trip Borysenko, causing him to lose the puck and giving Gobert a point blank shot on goal (see photo). Gobert's tally sealed the win for Rockford, 4-2.
The IceHogs remain in town for a rematch this Sunday at 3:00 pm, and it's a safe bet that the Outlaws will be looking to avenge what some are calling a tainted Rockford victory. Great seats for that game are still available.
