Chico Outlaws News Release

RENO, NV - The Chico Outlaws just couldn't stand prosperity in their series opener Saturday against Reno - despite taking four different leads in the contest, the Outlaws could not keep the Silver Sox in check...Chico ultimately dropping a 7-6 decision at Peccole Park on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

The Outlaws, who have always found winning in Reno difficult (Chico had lost 11 of 17 at Peccole Park heading into Saturday's game), jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Todd Gossage delivered a two-out triple to plate Daniel Nava, who with his leadoff single extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Reno tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd on a solo homer by Mike Done...one of three round-trippers that Outlaws starter Nick Singleton would serve up on the evening. Chico went back on top in the 3rd when Jesse Kovacs scored on a Nava single...Reno catcher David Nash dropping the throw at the plate...but in the bottom of the 3rd Sam Walker walked, went to third on a Victor Hall single and came home on a Maurice Cole groundout to knot up the game at two apiece.

Chico went up 3-2 in the 4th when Jason Van Meetren scored from third on an Eric Pringle fielder's choice grounder...but that lead didn't last long, either. Kane Simmons led off the bottom of the 4th by blasting his Golden Baseball League-leading 16th homer to once again tie the game. In the bottom of the 5th the Silver Sox went out in front when Walked lined a homer over the left field wall to make the score 4-3...but in the top of the 6th it was Reno's turn to surrender the lead - Scott Dragicevich homered off Silver Sox starter Adam Herendza to tie the game, then with Jason Matteucci aboard Pringle launched a big fly to dead center, putting the Outlaws back on top 6-4. That would turn out to be Chico's last hurrah - Reno tied the game in the bottom of the 6th on a pair of RBI groundouts...then in the 8th a two-out walk proved costly, as Chuck Sindlinger followed with a double down the right field line to plate Done and give the Silver Sox a 7-6 lead. The Silver Sox bullpen did the rest - left-hander Josh Evans and righty Eric Thomas held the Outlaws to just one hit over the final three innings to lock down the series-opening victory.

Evans (4-0) worked two innings to earn the win, with Thomas picking up his sixth save of the season...Daniel "Duck" Howard (1-2), making his first relief appearance for Chico, suffered the loss. The Outlaws outhit the Silver Sox 12-8...Nava, Van Meetren, Matteucci and Steve Boggs all collecting two hits for Chico, while Simmons and Hall each had two hits to pace Reno. Saturday's loss dropped the Outlaws to 12-18 in the second half and 37-31 overall; the Silver Sox improved to 11-19 in the second half and 29-38 for the year. The second and final game of the weekend mini-series takes place Sunday with right-hander Greg Bicknell (0-1) on the mound for Chico...Reno is expected to counter with lefty Dusty Bergman (5-3). Game time is 5:00pm; hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 4:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
