North Iowa Outlaws News Release
MASON CITY, IOWA - The NAHL's North Iowa Outlaws organization is teaming up with the American Red Cross and numerous volunteers this Sunday, October 30, to assist families affected by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma, along with the related aftermath.
Prior to the Outlaws' home game with Wasilla at 1:35 Sunday afternoon, a tailgate party will take place outside North Iowa Arena to generate funds for Hurricane Relief. For a minimum donation of five dollars, fans will be able to enjoy a tailgate-style meal (pulled pork sandwiches and the trimmings) and beverage.
All of the proceeds that are generated during the tailgate event will be given to the American Red Cross to assist in the organization's efforts to help those that were severely affected by recent hurricanes. The tailgate party will begin at 11:30 AM Sunday, and will continue until game time, or until everyone is served.
The tailgate party will also provide fans an opportunity to purchase a special t-shirt designed for the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief effort. The shirts, emblazoned with the slogan, "Give Blood, Play Hockey", will be on sale this coming Sunday during the pre-game tailgate event, as well as during the Outlaws' game with Wasilla. Proceeds from the shirt sales will be donated to the American Red Cross.
Additionally, the Outlaws are proud to team up with area schools, churches, and businesses for the "Hurricanes to Candy Canes" Christmas ornament drive which will kick off at the Outlaws' game Sunday. The concept was created by Mackenzie Lowry of Clear Lake, IA. Noting that Christmas is such a special time for her, Mackenzie feels that organizing a drive to collect Christmas ornaments will brighten the spirits of the families who lost everything, including holiday decorations, because of the fury of Hurricane Katrina.
The ornaments and decorations that are collected will be given to families who have relocated from Louisiana and are spending the holidays in the Iowa region.
Persons attending Sunday's game are encouraged to donate new or gently used Christmas ornaments for the "Hurricanes to Candy Canes" drive. Collection containers will be available at the Outlaws' home game with Wasilla Sunday afternoon, as well as at the four Outlaws' home games in November. The "Hurricanes to Candy Canes" Christmas ornament drive is expected to continue until the end of November. Other "Hurricanes to Candy Canes" drop-off sites are expected to be announced in the near future.
