Outlaws Even Series with win over Flyers

FULLERTON, CA - The Chico Outlaws offense piled up 15 hits and Grant Gregg survived a shaky 2nd inning to post his first victory of the year as the Outlaws downed the Fullerton Flyers 9-5 Saturday night at Goodwin Field on the Cal State Fullerton campus...Chico evening their four game series with the Flyers at one win apiece.

The Outlaws jumped out to an early lead, plating four runs in the 2nd off Fullerton starting pitcher Wes Faust - Craig Kuzmic put Chico on the board with a solo homer to right...later in the inning Jesse Kovacs doubled in Lino Garcia to make the score 2-0...Todd Gossage came home on a Steve Booker sacrifice fly...and Bobby Gandolfo drove in Kovacs with a single to right. But the Flyers bounced back in their half of the 2nd to tie the score - Joey Hendricks singled to knock in Peanut Williams...JacobWallis came home two batters later on Matt Ferrara's fielders choice grounder...Gabriel Mayorga then stepped to the plate and cranked a two-run homer over the center field wall to knot the game up at four apiece.

Chico went back on top in the 3rd when Desi Wilson walked to lead off the inning and scored three pitches later on Mike Mallory's double to right...the Outlaws 5-4 lead held up until the 4th when Fullerton again tied the score on an RBI single by Toshi Sasa. The game stayed deadlocked until the 7th when Chico finally went ahead to stay - with Nick Casanova on in relief for the Flyers, Gandolfo lined a one-out single to right, stole second and scored on Wilson's base hit to center, giving the Outlaws a 5-4 lead. While Chico reliever Phil Springman kept Fullerton in check in the 7th and 8th innings, the Outlaws salted the game away in the 9th, scoring three times - Mallory delivering a two-out RBI single to plate Booker, then Kuzmic dropped a two-run double into the right field gap, upping Chico's advantage to 9-5. A.J. Ampi came out of the Outlaws bullpen to get the final three Fullerton outs in the bottom of the 9th to lock down Chico's fourth win in seven tries on their current road trip.

Gregg (1-2) worked six innings to earn the victory, while Casanova (0-2) took the loss in relief. Wilson went 3-for-3 and reached base five times to pace the Outlaws offense; Kuzmic finished the night with two hits and three RBI, while Mallory, Booker, Gandolfo and Kovacs each chipped in with two hits...the Flyers had eight hits, with Mayorga going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Saturday's win improved Chico's record to 11-12 on the season...Fullerton slipped to 11-11 for the year. The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 5:05pm...right-hander Mike Cosgrove (1-0) will be on the mound for the Outlaws in the first game, with lefty Robert Anaya (0-2) getting the start in the nightcap. The Outlaws will take Monday off before opening a six-game homestand at Nettleton Stadium with the first of two against the Flyers.
