San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

SAN DIEGO - A game that saw four lead changes, six home runs, and soaring ERA's ended with a perfect ninth by Armada pitcher Mike Peck. Long Beach Armada first baseman Samone Peters went 4-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. A hot day at the park resulted in balls flying out of the park. The Surf Dawgs, who chipped away at the lead in the seventh and eighth innings, couldn't put together one last rally as they did the night before.

The Armada drew first once again. After Adonis Harrison reached on a fielder's choice, Jeff LaRue came up and homered deep to left field. The shot landed past the second fence and went bouncing down 55th Street.

The Surf Dawgs would answer back in the bottom of the frame. Matthew Connolly walked and stole second. With one out, Seth Pietsch would single home Connolly from third. Nick Guerra came up with two outs and homered to right, his first of the year, to give the Dawgs a 3-2 lead.

Long Beach came right back in the top of the second. Samone Peters hit his first of two home runs on the night, a titanic shot to left. After two outs, David Ramirez and Ryan Webb hit back to back singles. Adonis Harrison, who left the game in the seventh with an apparent arm injury, cleared the bases with a triple. Starting pitcher Brent Pourciau clearly did not bring his good stuff with him to the mound as he only went three innings, giving up five runs, all of which were earned.

The Surf Dawgs offense completely exploded in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and runners on the corners, Matt Wheatland, who went 3-for-5, singled in Tony Garcia to score the first run of the inning. A walk to Matthew Connolly loaded the bases and Adam Mandel forced in a run the hard way when he was hit with a pitch. That brought up Seth Pietsch, 4-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBI's, who hit a grandslam to break the deadlock and give San Diego a 9-5 lead.

The lead would falter in just two innings. Peters hit another blast in the fifth to close the gap to 9-7. But the Dawgs downfall for the night was a five-run sixth by the Armada. Will Carr (0-2) was charged with all seven of the Armada runs in the fifth and sixth.

Garcia would hit a home run to close the lead to 12-10, and a Guerra RBI single in the eighth brought it closer. But Peck was outstanding, shutting down the last four batters for the Surf Dawgs.

Tomorrow brings new hope for the Surf Dawgs (9-14) who welcome Yuma to Tony Gwynn Stadium. There is a special start time of 7:20 PT for tomorrow's game, as there will be a celebrity softball game which will begin at 6:00 PT. Stars such as Jim Harbaugh, Quentin Jammer, Andre Reed, and Eric Allen will take their swings in the name of charity. The game will be brought to you by Fresh Start Surgical Gifts.
