Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - Two Long Beach errors paved the way for Jason Van Meetren's 6th inning go-ahead single, and the Chico bullpen made the run stand up as the Outlaws nipped the Armada 4-3 Friday night at Nettleton Stadium...the Outlaws winning their fourth straight game and 11th in the last 15.
Chico wasted little time getting on the board against Long Beach starter Jeff Heaverlo; Steve Boggs led off the Outlaws 1st inning with a double and came home on a Scott Dragicevich single to put Chico up 1-0. In the 2nd inning a Van Meetren single, Todd Gossage double and Jason Matteucci groundout resulted in another run and a 2-0 Outlaws advantage. Chico starter Derrick Loop kept the Armada in check until the 4th, when Jaime Martinez clubbed a mammoth home run over the left field wall...the solo shout trimming the Outlaws lead to 2-1. Chico got the run back in the bottom of the 4th when Daniel Nava singled, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored a Gossage single to right, giving the Outlaws a 3-1 lead.
Long Beach was able to tie up the contest with single runs in the 5th and 6th - Johnny Kaplan plated David Ramirez with a two-out infield single to make the score 3-2...then an inning later Dan Trumble came home from third on a John Jefferson wild pitch to knot up the game. In the bottom of the 6th, Chico grabbed the lead again on what proved to be the winning run - Nava reached on a throwing error by Kaplan at second base...Craig Kuzmic then singled; Nava advancing all the way to third when Brandon Thompson bobbled the ball in right field. That set the stage for Van Meetren, who bounced a single through the left side of the infield to put the Outlaws on top for good. Jefferson came back out to toss a scoreless 7th inning...Jesse Oster came in from the Chico bullpen and struck out the side in the 8th...and with the potential tying run at second base with one out in the 9th, Outlaws closer Todd Gelatka struck out Kirk Gross and Jorge Araiza to end the game and give Chico its sixth win over the Armada in 13 tries this season.
Jefferson (5-2) picked up the win, while Gelatka notching his league-leading and single season club record 18th game...Heaverlo (7-5) allowed just three earned runs in five-and-a-third innings but was saddled with the loss. The Outlaws had nine hits on the night, with Van Meetren and Gossage each going 2-for-3...Gabriel Mayorga had two hits to pace the Armada's eight hit attack. Friday's win improved Chico's second half record to 17-19 and overall mark to 42-32...Long Beach dropped to 25-11 in the second half and 48-26 for the year. Game three of the series is set for Saturday night, with left-hander Matt Campbell (3-0) on the mound for the Outlaws...the Armada will go with righty Ryan Claypool (7-3). Game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet, on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio or 1340 KEWE-AM.
