Chico Outlaws News Release

CHICO, CA - Rookie right-hander Tyler Pearson - with relief help from Jesse Oster and Todd Gelatka - held the St. George offense in check, and Chico made several early runs stand up as the Outlaws posted a 4-1 victory Wednesday night at Nettleton Stadium...the Outlaws taking the back end of a two game mini-series with the visiting Roadrunners.

Pearson was shaky out of the box, giving up singles to two of the first three hitters he faced, but the former University of Northern Colorado Bear quickly settled into a groove, retiring 13 of the next 14 batters. The Outlaws opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning when Steve Boggs singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on Jason Van Meetren's two-out single to right. In the 3rd Chico plated a pair of runs as Jesse Kovacs singled home Boggs and later scored on Van Meetren's double play grounder...the Outlaws taking a 3-0 lead.

St. George broke through in the top of the 5th inning with what proved to be their only run of the game - with two outs, Geron Sands singled to left and scored when Ryan Stevenson tripled into the right-center field gap. But Pearson stiffened and shut out the Roadrunners in the 6th and 7th innings...then Oster came in from the Outlaws bullpen and set down St. George in order in the 8th. Roadrunners reliever Mike Storey, taking over for starter Mark Woodyard in the 4th, tossed four shutout innings until Chico broke through with an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th when Van Meetren led off the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch, putting the Outlaws up 4-1. Gelatka came on to close things out, and though he gave up a one-out double to Gary Harris, Gelatka struck out Santiago Guerrero and got Steven Wright to ground out to third to end it and give Chico the win - the team's 16th in its last 20 games.

Pearson (3-2) struck out five in seven innings of work to pick up the victory, with Gelatka notching his ninth save of the season...Woodyard (0-6) lasted just three innings in taking the loss. Boggs and Van Meetren each had three hits to lead the Outlaws offense, who with Wednesday's win improve to 22-10 on the season and stay two games in front of second place Long Beach in the race for the Golden Baseball League's first half title (the Armada beat Reno Wednesday 8-6)...the loss dropped St. George to 6-26 for the year. The Outlaws and Long Beach meet up Thursday at Nettleton Stadium for the opener of a four-game set, marking the first time the GBL's top two teams have squared off this season...left-hander Derrick Loop (5-1) will be on the mound for Chico in the series opener.
