Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - The Chico Outlaws shook off the sting of Wednesday's disappointing 10-9 loss to Reno with one of their best all-around efforts of the year - the Outlaws posted double digits in both runs and hits, and Trevor Caughey - with relief help from Eric Sheridan and Ben Shockey - completely shut down the Silver Sox offense in an 11-0 victory Thursday night at Nettleton Stadium...the win gave Chico a split of the four-game series.
The Outlaws struck big early in the contest, sending 11 men to the plate and scoring seven times in the 2nd inning - a bases-loaded walk to Steve Boggs forced home the first run of the ballgame...then Jesse Kovacs laced a single to right, plating a pair; when the ball was bobbled by outfielder Juan Senreiso, Boggs scored all the way from first to make it a 4-0 game. Jose Valdez singled home Kovacs and scored on a Julian Benavidez double to right...Tony Torcato then knocked in Benavidez with a line single to right, putting Chico up 7-0. The Outlaws widened their lead with a run in the 4th; Valdez scoring on a two-out Lino Garcia single to left to make it 8-0. In the 6th the Outlaws plated a pair against Reno reliever Nathan Ginsberg - Valdez tripled home Casey Garrison and would later score on a Todd Gossage groundout to up Chico's lead to 10-0.
Caughey, meanwhile, had little trouble keeping the Silver Sox offense silenced...at one point, he retired eight in a row and 13 of 14. Chico completed the night's scoring in the bottom of the 7th when back-to-back doubles by Boggs and Eric Pringle made it 11-0...Sheridan then took over for Caughey in the 8th and retired Reno in order; Shockey gave up a couple of 9th inning hits but struck out Ryan Brown with the bases loaded to preserve the shutout and give the Outlaws their 12th win over the Silver Sox in 20 tries this season.
Caughey (7-4) allowed just three hits and struck out six in his seven innings of work to earn the victory; Reno starter Jesse Hall (5-6) took the loss. Chico put up 13 hits on the night, with five starters - Boggs, Kovacs, Valdez, Torcato and Matt Ceriani - each contributing two; Steve Alexander went 2-for-3 for Reno. Thursday's win ups the Outlaws second half record to 9-14 and overall mark to 24-41...the Silver Sox drop to 7-14 in the second half and 25-40 on the year. The two teams meet again on Friday, but this time at Peccole Park in Reno for the opener of a three-game series - right-hander Berek Fasking (2-3) will get the start for Chico, with lefty Daniel Chaffardet (0-3) expected to throw for the Silver Sox. Game time is 7:05pm; hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
