Chico Outlaws News Release

The Chico Outlaws suffered their toughest loss of the year on Saturday night in Tucson, losing 13-6. On Father's Day, the Outlaws made up for it, winning in dramatic fashion at Hi Corbett Field on a two-run Rich Janeway homerun to right field in the top of the ninth inning to win 5-4 over the Toros.

Cody Walden got the start for Tucson and pitched seven strong innings, matching Chico's Javier Ortiz, who went six solid innings. Walden had a one-hitter going through five innings, in which both teams were locked up in a scoreless tie.

That changed in the top of the sixth, when the Outlaws put up three runs off Walden, banging out four hits and taking advantage of an error to Tucson third baseman Wally Backman Jr. Ortiz led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on Backman's error. Bobby Hill hit into a 4-6-3 double play, advancing Ortiz to third. JJ Sherrill then hit a single to drive in Ortiz for the game's first run. After a single by Mitch Einertson, Ismael Castro came up and knocked in both runners with a single to the right-center power alley to make it 3-0 Outlaws.

Tucson put up a run in the sixth when Lino Garcia, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on an a miscue by Hill at second for the Toros first run of the contest.

A second run for the Toros came in in the seventh when Brian Bistagne scored after his leadoff walk on a fielder's choice by Ryan Priddy, cutting the Chico lead to 3-2.

Two more runs plated for the Toros in the eighth inning off relievers Justin Segal and Matt Perisho. Segal gave up a leadoff single to Backman, who went to second on Luis Apodaca's single. Perisho came in and promptly gave up a RBI single to Francisco Plasencia, tying the game at three apeice. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Jim Rushford drove in Plascenia, giving the Toros the lead at 4-3.

That set the stage for Janeway's homerun in the ninth. Castro doubled off reliever Toby Nordman (1-3) before Janeway stepped in and crushed the ball over the right field fence, putting the Outlaws up 5-4.

Perisho (1-0) pitched the bottom of the ninth to earn his first win of the year.

With the win, Chico is now 20-6 on the year, while Tucson fell to 13-15. Chico finished 4-2 on the Arizona road trip through Yuma and Tucson, winning both series two games to one.

The Outlaws return home on Tuesday night to start a three game homestand against Edmonton. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm PST.
