Chico Outlaws News Release
ST. GEORGE, UT - For the second straight night, the Chico Outlaws racked up double digits in both runs and hits, pounding St. George 14-7 Thursday at Bruce Hurst Field...Chico winning its second straight road game while handing the Roadrunners their fourth consecutive loss.
It was a big night for the Outlaws Jason Van Meetren, who became just the second player in franchise history to hit a grand slam, and his six runs batted in on the night tied a club record for RBI in a single game. But before Chico's bats could get untracked, it was St. George who took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning when Brett Flowers walked, advanced to third on a Geoff Wagner single and scored on a wild pitch by Outlaws starter Phil Springman. Chico responded with five runs in the top of the 3rd, tying the score when Roadrunners starter Joey Muro walked Daniel Nava with the bases loaded. That set the stage for Van Meetren, who bombed the first pitch he saw from St. George reliever Ben Buker over the left-center field wall...the grand salami giving Chico a 5-1 lead.
In the 4th St. George cut the Outlaws lead to two when, with the bases loaded, Springman hit Steven Wright with a pitch to force home a run...Dustin Hicks then knocked in Wagner with a fielder's choice grounder. Chico answered by sending 11 men to the plate in the 5th...Todd Gossage delivered an RBI single and Brock Ungricht and Steve Boggs delivered two-run singles to up the Outlaws advantage to 10-3. But as was the case in the series opener Wednesday, the Roadrunners climbed back into the contest, scoring four runs in the 6th inning to pull within three. It stayed that way until the 8th when Chico pulled away with a pair of unearned runs - Van Meetren delivering a two-run single to plate Nava and Scott Dragicevich - then in the 9th the Outlaws salted the game away when Jason Matteucci singled in Jesse Kovacs and Dragicevich doubled home Eric Pringle to make the score 14-7. Chico reliever Tyler Pearson took care of the rest, striking out the side in the bottom of the 9th to lock down the victory.
Springman (1-0) allowed five earned runs in five-and-a-third innings, but it was good enough to earn the victory...Muro (0-2) took the loss. The Outlaws collected 15 hits, with Pringle going 3-for-5 and Matteucci, Dragicevich, Van Meetren and Ungricht chipping in with two hits apiece...Wagner, Sands and Johnny Coit each had two hits to pace the Roadrunners 10-hit attack. With Thursday's win, Chico improves to 8-6 and moves back into second place in the GBL standings...St. George drops to 3-11 on the season and falls nine games back of the first place Yuma Scorpions. The Outlaws and Roadrunners play game three of their four-game set Friday night, with Chico sending right-hander Jake McKinley (1-1) to the mound to face righty Shannon Sprouse (1-0) for St. George. Game time is 6:05pm...catch all the action beginning at 5:35pm with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
