Chico Outlaws News Release

ST. GEORGE, UT - The Chico Outlaws fought back from two eight run deficits to pull to within a run of St. George, only to see the Roadrunners plate seven runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to win a wild 18-11 contest in the opener of a three-game series Thursday night at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah.

St. George scored early and often against Outlaws starting pitcher Berek Fasking - Brandon Taylor launched a solo homer in the 1st and later in the inning Claudio Arias doubled home Cody Nowlin to take a 2-0 lead. In the 2nd the Roadrunners, aided by a two-out Eric Pringle throwing error, scored four more runs to go up 6-0...then in the 4th Nowlin doubled home Taylor and Greg Lemon to extend St. George's lead to 8-0. Roadrunners starter Mac Nelson, making his pro debut, kept Chico off the scoreboard until the 5th when the Outlaws struck for three - Shane Cronin blasted a solo homer to left...Lino Garcia doubled and scored on a wild pitch...and Jesse Kovacs came home on Steve Boggs' RBI single, making the score 8-3. St. George regained their eight-run cushion with three in the 6th off Chico reliever Derrick Landavazo - Nowlin doubled home a run and scored on a Wiki Gonzalez sacrifice fly and Arias singled and came home on a Liu Rodriguez groundout, putting the Roadrunners up 11-3.

The Outlaws would make it a contest by scoring three runs in the 7th on a Lino Garcia solo homer and a two-run double by Casey Garrison...then in the 8th Chico made the score 11-10 by plating four more - Gabe Riley singled home Julian Benavidez...a bases loaded walk to Boggs forced in Cronin...and Garrison shot a double down the right field line to plate Riley and Matt Ceriani. But in the bottom of the 8th the Roadrunners would send 10 men to the plate against Outlaws reliever Rob Ellis, coming away with seven runs - RBI doubles by Gonzalez and Ryan Stevenson and a grand slam by Taylor made the score 18-10...Chico would score a run in the 9th, but Anthony Pluta eventually got the final three outs to give St. George the victory and send the Outlaws to their fifth straight loss and fourth on their 10-game road trip.

Nelson (1-0) went five innings to pick up the win, while Fasking (1-3) lasted just four innings in taking the loss. Garrison led the Outlaws 13-hit attack, going 2-for-5 and driving in four runs; Cronin, Garcia, Riley and Ceriani each had two hits...the Roadrunners racked up 20 hits on the night, with Nowlin, Arias and Loman picking up four apiece; Nowlin and Taylor each knocked in five runs. Thursday's loss dropped Chico to 9-20 on the year...St. George improved to 13-16 on the season. Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday, with the Outlaws sending left-hander Beau Hintz (0-0) to the mound. First pitch is 6:05pm Pacific time...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play on ESPN Radio 101.7 FM and AM 1340; the game can also be heard on-line at www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
