Chico Outlaws News Release
FULLERTON, CA - The Chico Outlaws pitching staff turned in another solid performance Monday, but lack of offense continues to plague the team as the Orange County Flyers needed just three 6th inning runs to beat the Outlaws 3-1 in the opener of a two game mini-series at Goodwin Field on the Cal State Fullerton campus.
Chico's Nick Singleton and Reed Dickert locked horns in an impressive pitcher's duel, and strikeouts were many - Singleton (in his first start since striking out a career high 11 last week against Reno) fanned six Flyers in his first three innings of work, while Dickert (who K'd 13 St. George batters in his last start) struck out five Outlaws over the first three frames. Chico would break through in the 4th with what turned out to be its only run of the game - Scott Dragicevich led off the inning with a double and scored when Daniel Nava doubled off the right field wall. The Outlaws stranded Nava at second and had to be content with the one run...and it wouldn't be the only time Monday night that Chico left runners in scoring position.
Singleton kept Fullerton off the board until the 6th, when Orange County scored all they would need for the win. Garry Templeton II led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on Rich Pohle's bloop single to center. Singleton then hit Scott Goodman with a pitch to load the bases...Templeton then coming home when Mark Okano was plunked. The Flyers took the lead when Pohle scored on a force play at second...Orange County then went up 3-1 as Goodman scored on a Buddy Morales sacrifice fly. The Outlaws - who had stranded runners in scoring position in the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th inning - missed an opportunity to get back in the ballgame when they left runners at second and third in the 7th. Flyers reliever Gary Gallegos tossed a scoreless 8th inning and closer Dave Coggin set down Chico in order in the 9th to wrap up Orange County's third straight win.
Gallegos (1-1) got credit for the victory, with Coggin notching his third save of the season...Singleton (0-1) was saddled with the loss. Each team had just five hits on the night; Todd Gossage posting a 2-for-3 night for Chico while Pohle collected three hits for Fullerton. Eric Pringle tied an Outlaws single game team record Monday with three stolen bases, but it wasn't enough to keep Chico from dropping its third straight and slipping to 6-5 on the season; with the win, Fullerton improved to 6-5. The finale of the short two game set is scheduled for Tuesday; right-hander Steve Jones (0-0) is scheduled to be on the mound for the Outlaws, with lefty Jamie Douglas (0-1) slated to throw for the Flyers. Game time is 7:05; hear all the action with Rory Miller on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio beginning with the Outlaws pre-game show at 6:35.
