Denver Outlaws News Release

BOSTON - The Denver Outlaws Lacrosse Team selected ten newcomers and retained the rights to defenseman Sean McCarthy (Hofstra) and midfielder Rocco Romero (Cornell) in the MLL Supplemental Draft today. The Supplemental Draft consists of distributing the players who were not on the team's 23-man protected roster at the end of September. Outlaws' veteran midfielders Jeff Sonke (North Carolina) and Josh Sims (Princeton) both had their rights picked by new teams with Sonke going to the Chicago Machine and Sims being drafted by the Washington Bayhawks.

"We picked up some very good lacrosse players, both offensively and defensively in this draft," said Denver Outlaws Head Coach and General Manager Brian Reese. "These guys are going to provide good depth and compete well for spots on our roster. All of the players we picked up have played very high level lacrosse and will be a good fit for our team."

Attackman Garret Billings was the first selection by the Outlaws (fifth overall) and joins the team after being named a third-team All-American at the University of Virginia. Billings led the Cavaliers in goals with 38 and was second in points with 59. This past summer the western-Canadian native (Langley, B.C.) played with the Langley Thunder in the Senior A Western Lacrosse Association.

The Outlaws second pick (11th overall) was longstick midfielder/defenseman Brendan Skakandi, who was a three-year starter at Johns Hopkins and co-captain of their 2007 NCAA Championship Squad.

Four of the players have ties to Colorado. Romero (Cornell; Rd. 6) is originally from Denver and currently lives in Colorado. McCarthy (Hofstra; Rd. 9) currently lives in Colorado and was an assistant coach in 2009 at Denver East High School. Midfielder Justin Bokmeyer (Rd. 10) played college lacrosse with Outlaws' goalie Adam Fullerton at Army and is rejoined his former teammate at Fort Carson Army Base in Colorado Springs, Colo. Lastly, midfielder Joey Murray (Rd. 12) attended Regis Jesuit HS in Aurora before playing and graduating from the University of Denver.
