Erie Otters News Release
Just one night removed from slumping to a 4-2 defeat against the Guelph Storm-the OHL's nineteenth-placed team-the Erie Otters continued their weekend journey through Ontario to face the OHL's twentieth-placed team, the Barrie Colts. Erie goaltender Troy Timpano, who had not played since January due to severe pneumonia, received the start in net. The Otters rebounded from their loss to Guelph, beating the Colts 7-3.
Though the Otters would start the first period strong-and maintain their quick pace, outshooting their opponents 11-6 through twenty minutes-Barrie scored first in the contest: Roy Radke, entering the Otters' zone with speed, snapped a quick shot that beat Timpano short-side to give the Colts a 1-0 lead. Radke's goal would be the only one scored through the first period, and the Otters headed off for the intermission with some soul-searching to do.
Erie's offense finally made contact early in the second period: Alex DeBrincat continued his scoring streak by hammering a shot past Barrie goaltender David Ovsjannikov, tying the game at one; it was DeBrincat's 53rd goal in as many games. Then, just eleven seconds later, Dylan Strome deked around Ovsjannikov to slip the puck past the goal line, gaining the lead for Erie. Taylor Raddysh secured a two-goal lead for the Otters several minutes later; he waited for the puck on the far side of Barrie's net, then batted it through the goalie for Erie's third unanswered tally. The Colts' Curtis Douglas managed to get one back for his team by converting on a rebound, and Roy Radke tied the game minutes later. But the Otters offense would not be denied: Hurricanes prospect Warren Foegele made it 4-3, and DeBrincat scored his second of the game to give Erie a two-goal lead. The Otters' five-goal period put them up 5-3 entering the third.
Darren Raddysh increased the Otters' lead to three early in the third period, and his brother Taylor later secured a four-goal lead late in the third period. Barrie was unable to muster any sort of offensive response, and Erie maintained their lead for the 7-3 victory.
For the Otters, Alex DeBrincat had two goals and two assists; Dylan Strome scored a goal and four assists; Taylor Raddysh scored two goals and added an assist; and Darren Raddysh scored a goal and two assists. Troy Timpano, in his first game in over a month, made 11 saves on 14 shots. Despite his time out, Timpano sits at second in wins among OHL goalies this season with 30-he has played ten fewer games than Michael McNiven, who holds the number one spot.
Roy Radke scored two goals for Barrie. Jaden Peca and Jason Willms recorded two assists each. David Ovsjannikov made 34 saves on 41 shots in the loss.
The Otters continue their three-game weekend against the Owen Sound Attack on Sunday, February 26.
