Otters Rally for Five Unanswered Behind Downey's Shutout, Sova's Pair

Erie, Pennsylvania - After over a week away from game action due to weather postponements, the Erie Otters would return to the ice on Monday night for a rescheduled game against the OHL's top team, the Ottawa 67's. Standing at 18-1, and 1-0 against the Otters this season, Ottawa would look to continue their nine-game winning streak in their last game of the season against Erie. The Otters, meanwhile, would look to buck the trend of three straight losses - especially after an elongated rest period.

The top-scoring team in the Ontario Hockey League continued to show why that's the case for them, as Ottawa would strike for two goals in the first six minutes. Luca Pinelli (12) and Will Gerrior (2) would be responsible for the marks before the Otters could grab their first shot of the game. Erie would eventually grab their first shot - and shots - of the game, which would lead to a simply sensational goal from Liam Gilmartin (6) from Bressette and Saganiuk to make it 2-1 Ottawa. The 67's would add another pair of goals before period's end, as Anthony Costantini (4) and Caden Kelly (2) would give Ottawa a dominating 4-1 lead after 20. Ottawa would lead in shots 13-6.

Sometimes you need to shake the rust off. For the Erie Otters, that appeared to be the case, as Erie would come out in the second period as an absolutely dominant force. With Kyle Downey taking over in net for the Otters, the new blood would put blood in the water for the Otter offense. It would take a while to warm up, but with the hot Otter power play given the nod for the first time the game, they would strike for back-to-back-to-back man-advantage goals from Carey Terrance (7), Brett Bressette (9), and Spencer Sova (8) to knot things up. Far from being done yet, Spencer Sova (9) would score the eventual game-winning goal with 17:27 gone by in the second to see Erie jump up 5-4 heading into the third.

A mad dash in the third period would see the Ottawa 67's throw 13 shots on Downey in the final 20 minutes, but as he did in the first, the former Windsor Spitfire would stop everything that came his way. Both goaltenders would be sharp as a whip and respond to the call of duty where needed, but it would be the Otters who would outlast and outscore, as a Carey Terrance (8) empty-net goal would put the game final, and see Erie drop the OHL's top team 6-4.

Erie downs a CHL top five team to snap a three-game skid and ends Ottawa's nine-game winning streak as a result. A busy week lies ahead for the Erie Otters, as they welcome in the Soo Greyhounds on Thursday night for the 47th Annual Thanksgiving Night Game. Following an off-day Black Friday, Erie stays at home against the Barrie Colts for the 14th Annual Teddy Bear Toss, before a day trip to Kitchener on Sunday.
