Otters Fall in Last Tune up Before Opening Night

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Evansville Otters fell 8-6 against the Southern Illinois Miners Wednesday in the team's last exhibition before Opening Night.

Southern Illinois scored the game's first three runs, including a home run from Romeo Cortina in the top of the second inning.

Evansville only run came in the bottom of the second as Luis Vilorio scored on an RBI groundout by Ryan Long.

The Miners would score once in the third and once in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

Southern Illinois would one more run in the eighth, extending their lead to 6-1.

Conor Sullivan added two more to the Miners' lead with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Taylor Hillson knocked in a run with a single through the left side and Zach Welz drove in another run for the Otters with an RBI single.

Offensively, Zach Welz finished with three hits for the Otters.

Hunter Cullen lined a two-RBI single up the middle later in the inning, cutting the Otters' deficit down to 8-6.

The game ended on a line drive caught by the Miners' second baseman.

Wednesday was also Education Day at the ballpark as 3,512 students filled the stands.

Evansville will open the regular season Friday at Bosse Field against the Washington Wild Things at 6:35 p.m. Gates will open an hour before first pitch.

Opening Night will feature a lottery ticket giveaway to the first 1,000 fans ages 18 and over, courtesy of Hoosier Lottery. Fans can stay after the game to enjoy a dazzling firework show. Opening Night festivities are presented by Hoosier Lottery and Swat Pest.

Game coverage will be available on the Otters Digital Network, presented by Kruckemeyer and Cohn with Preston Leinenbach (play-by-play) and Bill McKeon (analyst) on the call.
