Erie, Pa. - A four-point night by Vincent Trocheck led the Plymouth Whalers to a 7-2 win over the Erie Otters Friday night in front of 3,042 fans at Erie Insurance Arena.
Stephen Harper started the scoring for the Otters two minutes and 47 seconds into the game, firing a shot under the glove of Alex Nedeljkovic from the left circle for his 18th goal of the season.
Trocheck tied the game at one with a power play goal at 12:39. Garrett Meurs broke the tie at 18:03 to give the Whalers a 2-1 lead. Twenty seconds later, Trocheck scored his second goal of the game to put the Whalers up by two going into the first intermission.
Connor McDavid scored 39 seconds into the second period to trim the deficit to one with a highlight reel goal. McDavid drove around Austin Levi towards the net and slipped the puck between the legs of Nedeljkovic as he dove to his right for his 25th goal of the season.
Unfortunately for the shorthanded Otters (dressing 16 skaters for the game), the Whalers defense prevented the Otters offense from scoring the rest of the game, as the Whalers scored three goals in the second to take a 6-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Tom Wilson scored the lone goal of the third period for Plymouth to complete their victory.
Next up for the Otters is a home tilt against the Windsor Spitfires Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Stephen Harper poster courtesy of Erie Sport Store. For tickets, call 814-452-4857 or go online to OttersHockey.com.
