Evansville Otters News Release
Evansville, IN.- The Evansville Otters add seven players to 2009 spring training roster. RHP Max Limonick, RHP Marty Wiesler, infielder David Burns, P/OF Rashad Ford, outfielder Donald Brown, catcher/IF Eddie Gonzales, and infielder Javier Brown will all report to spring training on May 6th.
Limonick, a Studio City, CA native played for the Los Angeles Valley College Monarchs.
Wiesler, a Paw Paw, WV native played four years at West Virginia University Institute of Technology. Weisler comes to the Otters from a trade with the Florence Freedom.
Wiesler spent the 2008 season pitching for the Chillicothe Paints and made 38 appearances all out of the bullpen. He finished the season with a 4.97 ERA and posted a 6-3 record. Wiesler's best month came in June when he went 2-0 with a 4.03 ERA. In that month he struck out 21 and held his opponents to a .198 average in 22.1 innings. He spent the 2007 season with the Paints appearing 11 times and he posted a lifetime best ERA of 4.79 and a record of 6-3.
Burns, resides in Luquillo, Puerto Rico played for Daytona Beach Community College, Lake Sumter Community College, and Old Dominion University graduating in December 2008.
Burns earned All-Conference honors and Academic All-American honors while in junior college. In his first year with Old Dominion he was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-East Region Second Team. He was one of four ODU players to start all 59 games in 2007, starting 52 games as DH. He led the Monarchs with eight home runs and 35 walks and was tied for the team lead with 61 RBIs. He was second on the squad with 71 hits and third with a .309 batting average.
In 2008 Burns was made Second Team All-CAA as the designated hitter with a .311 batting average. He once again led the ODU team in home run knocking out 12 and was second on the team with 44 RBIs. He made a second team CoSIDA Academic All-District III selection with a 3.88 GPA majoring in English and Linguistics and a minor in Spanish.
Ford, an East Bernard, TX native attended Texas Southern University playing for the Tigers from 2004-2008.
In 2008 Ford was named to the 2008 SWAC Baseball All-Tournament Team as the Tigers cruised through the tournament with a 4-0 record. In 2008 Ford was 2-3 and had an ERA of 7.34 in the 30.2 innings pitched.
Brown, a native of Oxnard, CA played at Pepperdine University for four years graduating in 2008 with a degree in business administration. Brown was drafted in the 37th round by the Seattle Mariners in 2007 but chose not to sign and returned for his senior season.
Following his senior year he played for the Bay Area Toros, the 2008 Continental Baseball League Champions. Brown appeared in 32 games averaging .232 in 82 at-bats with a .439 on-base percentage.
Gonzalez, a native of Puerto Rico residing in Brandon, FL is familiar with the Frontier League spending time on the River City Rascals, Chillicothe Paints, and Florence Freedom rosters.
Gonzales spent the 2008 season with the Freedom starting 39 games behind the plate and making 154 plate appearances in 43 games with a .213 batting average with 16 RBIs and 3 home runs. He spent the 2007 season in Florence appearing in 49 games at shortstop, pitcher, catcher, third base, and second. He had 150 plate appearances with 136 at-bats with 10 RBIs and an OPS average of .501.
Javier Brown, a native of San Diego, CA attended Grossmont Community College before spending the 2008-2009 season playing in the Australia Winter League for the West Torrens Eagles.
While he was with the Eagles he batted .410 with 31 RBIs, 27 stolen bases, and 52 runs. He was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 37th round of the 2008 amateur entry draft. He spent the 2008 season with the Gulf Coast Twins appearing in 17 games splitting between second base and short stop. He had 47 at-bats producing 11 hits for a .234 batting average and an on-base percentage of .351.
The Evansville Otters are members of the Frontier League 12-team independent professional baseball league that will play its 17th season this summer.
