Ottawa RedBlacks News Release
OTTAWA-GATINEAU - Today, the Ottawa REDBLACKS announced their participation in the TELUS #EndBullying All-Stars anti-bullying program, which focuses on providing youth with the resources and skills to help them stay safe online and put an end to cyberbullying. The program will feature a series of appearances in local classrooms with REDBLACKS players presenting TELUS Wise workshops to students from grades 2 to 6.
The TELUS #EndBullying All-Stars program was developed, in partnership with TELUS Wise, to help educators, coaches, parents, and kids understand how to create a culture of respect and kindness on the field and online.
"It's an honour to be associated with such an important program," said Alex Mateas, Offensive Lineman, one of several REDBLACKS' players who have been trained as a TELUS #EndBullying All-Star Ambassador. "It's such an insidious problem and it happens in every school across the country. Kids who are being bullied need to know that they are not alone. For every person that tries to break you, there's somebody else who's got your back. The fight to end all forms of bullying, on and offline, is a team sport."
Introduced in 2013, TELUS Wise, an industry-leading educational digital literacy program, offers free informative workshops and resources to help Canadians of all ages have a positive experience as digital citizens. TELUS Wise workshops and resources cover topics including protecting your online security, privacy, and reputation, rising above online bullying, and using technology responsibly.
"Cyberbullying affects more than one million Canadian youth every month. As a world-leading technology company and one of the most giving companies in the world, TELUS believes it has a responsibility to help solve the crucial issue of cyberbullying," said TELUS Wise Director, Nimmi Kanji. "To date, TELUS has reached over 245,000 Canadians through its TELUS Wise workshops and invested more than $205 million in educational programs to promote safe and kind behaviour online. Partnering with the Ottawa REDBLACKS helps us expand our reach and share important messages about positive digital citizenship with youth," continued Kanji.
Alex Mateas will conduct his first workshop at St. Isidore Elementary School in Kanata on Nov. 22, 2019.
