OTTAWA - Ottawa Rapid FC announced Monday that they have signed former Swedish youth national team member, defender/midfielder Ellen Gibson. As per club policy, the terms of the deal were not announced.

"Ellen Gibson brings a commanding presence to both center back and center mid, seamlessly transitioning between defensive stability and playmaking," said Ottawa Rapid FC Technical Director, Kristina Kiss. "Her composure under pressure and deep understanding of the game will make her a crucial anchor for our team."

Born in Stockholm, Gibson's interest in soccer developed at an early age and when she was four, she joined Hammarby IF's youth academy, where she began training as a midfielder.

Hammarby is where she began her senior career in 2011 and, except for two seasons while at Santa Clara University (2015-16), it is the only club she had played for up until her move to Rapid FC. During her time at Hammarby, Gibson made 230 appearances across all competitions.

Known for her leadership and consistency, Gibson played a key role in the team's success, including winning the Damallsvenskan in 2023 and the Swedish Cup in 2023.

Gibson represented Sweden internationally from 2011 to 2014, as part of the U17 and U19 youth teams, appearing in 19 matches. She captained the team that won the silver medal at the UEFA European Women's U-17 Championship in 2012-13 and was named to the Team of the Tournament for her play. Gibson was also part of the squad that captured silver while competing at the Nordic Games in 2011 (U-15 level).
