Missoula PaddleHeads News Release

HELENA, MT - The Missoula Osprey scored seven runs without recording an out in the top of the first inning, and cruised to an 11-3 win over the Helena Brewers at Kindrick Legion Field on Thursday.

Bobby Borchering hit a three-run home run to cap off the seven-run first, while Keon Broxton added a two-run single in the first at-bat for Missoula. The first nine batters reached, and 12 batters in all went to the plate in the first. Paul Goldschmidt and Ramon Castillo added RBI singles for the Osprey in the first.

Bobby Stone would cap off the Missoula scoring with a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. With the home run, his 15th of the season, Stone not only tied Goldschmidt for the team lead in home runs, but the tandem tied for the most hit by Osprey teammates. Jesus Cota (16) and Scott Hairston (14) combined to hit 30 home runs in the 2001 season.

The beneficiary of all of the run support was Miguel Pena (2-5), who pitched an effective five innings to pick up a win for his second straight start. Sammy De Los Santos, Scott Allen and Keith Cantwell combined to keep the Brewers bats quiet, scattering three hits and a walk in the final four innings.

The win also moved the Osprey (15-15, 36-32) closer to clinching a playoff berth. The magic number to eliminate the Brewers from both the second-half and wild-card contention now stands at 5. Any combination of five Osprey wins or Brewers losses would eliminate the Brewers. The magic number for the Osprey to eliminate the Billings Mustangs stands at 4.

The Osprey return home to start a six-game homestand, with the first two games on Friday and Saturday coming against the Great Falls Voyagers. The battle for first place in the Pioneer League's North Division second-half standings won't be fully decided in the series, but one of the teams can take control with a sweep. The Osprey will send out Charles Brewer, who looks for his 8th win of the season, against Voyager right-hander JR Ballinger.

Tickets for any remaining Osprey home game this season can be obtained by calling the Osprey at (406) 543-3300, stopping by the Osprey Team Store at 412 W. Alder, or ordering online at www.missoulaosprey.com.
