Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE, WI (March 3, 2006) - The Milwaukee Wave has recruited United States National soccer team member, Leslie Osborne, to participate in their Reality All-Stars/Wave Legends game following the Wave's contest against the Philadelphia KiXX on Sunday, March 19 (1:05 p.m. kickoff).
Osborne, a native of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, played for Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where she earned Parade and NSCAA All-American honors as a senior. She was also named the Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year and Wisconsin Player of the Year as a sophomore and senior. She won two state championships before moving on to Santa Clara University. She continued to star at Santa Clara and received her first full call up to the full National Team in July 2003.
The Reality All-Stars soccer game is part of the Reality All-Stars Soccer Festival hosted by the Wave. Ethan Zohn, Survivor Africa Winner, will be in town with many of his "castaway" friends to promote his global AIDS organization, Grassroot Soccer. Several scheduled events throughout the weekend include the Wave taking on the Chicago Storm at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17, a special charity dinner hosted by Miller Brewing Company at Fred's Pub on Saturday, Sunday's game against the KiXX (Keith Tozer bobble-head game) as well as other appearances throughout the weekend.
For details, contact the Milwaukee Wave offices at 414-224-WAVE or visit MilwaukeeWave.com. Participating sponsors include: Miller Brewing Company, CBS 58, Saz's, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Hyatt, Angel Limousine, Cheesehead Limousine, Karl's Event Rental, Mazamba, Sandals, WKLH and WMLW.
Grassroot Soccer is a nonprofit 501c3 organization whose mission is to mobilize the global soccer community in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Founded by former professional soccer players, Grassroot Soccer trains soccer stars in the world's most HIV affected countries to deliver prevention messages to the kids who revere them. The idea was brought to Ethan Zohn by his friend, Dr. Tommy Clark. They had both played in Zimbabwe and saw what was happening to their friends. With a portion of his winnings, some pro player friends and Dr. Clark, they came together to form Grassroot Soccer.
The Milwaukee Wave was established in 1984 as one of six charter members of the American Indoor Soccer Association (AISA). In 2001, the Wave transitioned to being a successful member of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). Through the guidance of head coach Keith Tozer, the winningest coach in Wave and North American indoor soccer history, the Wave has won four league titles (1997-98, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2004-05), seven regular season championships, and has made seven championship series appearances. The Wave plays at home in the US Cellular Arena located in downtown Milwaukee.
