St. Louis Steamers News Release
Long Layoff Leads to Loss: The Steamers enjoyed a nice long break between action for a couple of weeks, 10 days actually. They were idle from Feb. 20th until Mar. 3rd, when they traveled to California to take on the expansion Cougars. But the long rest proved to be costly as they were defeated 8-5 in Stockton Arena. It was the first loss of the season to California. The loss also ended the Steamers' 5 game winning streak.
Steamers Clinch Berth into Post-Season: Despite losing to California Friday night, the Steamers clinched a spot in the MISL Championship Series before even taking the field thanks to the Baltimore Blast defeating the Philadelphia KiXX, 5-2 in Baltimore's 1st Mariner Arena. The KiXX's loss guarantees that they cannot catch the Steamers in the standings, ensuring St. Louis will be one of the top four teams in the MISL standings come playoff time. The Steamers are still trying to secure home field advantage throughout the Championship Series.
Rough Weekend to be at the Top of the Standings: The Steamers were not the only team to have a tough weekend to the bottom feeders in the MISL. Coming into the weekend, Baltimore and Milwaukee were tied for second place, but the Blast has emerged in second all alone going into this week. Mostly in part because Milwaukee was stunned at home by California, just 2 days after the Cougars upset the top-dwelling Steamers. Baltimore didn't escape unharmed either. Although winning Friday night against the Philadelphia KiXX, the Blast turned around and lost to those same KiXX the very next night in Wachovia Spectrum.
Reiniger is Closing in on Milestone: The 600 goal mark is even closer for forward Joe Reiniger. The Collinsville, IL native is nearing in on 600 career professional indoor soccer goals for a career. He is currently at 599 goals. Being from the St. Louis area, he would like to be able to do it at home. He scored a goal in the last Steamers game (Mar. 3rd) inching him even closer to the milestone. It was his first goal since Jan. 29th, also against the California Cougars.
The Week Ahead: The Steamers will be playing in front of the home crowd for the first time since Feb. 20th when they take on the Philadelphia KiXX on Saturday night. It will be the first time the Steamers will be playing the KiXX at Savvis since the home opener all the way back on Nov. 26th. The Steamers won that game 8-4. The last time these two played was back on Feb. 18th with St. Louis again winning, this time 8-6.
