Orange County SC Adds Two Rangers FC Players for the Second Straight Season
May 14, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Orange County SC News Release
Orange County SC announced today the acquisitions of defender Rhys Breen and midfielder Jack Thomson from Rangers FC. Pending league and federation approval, the two Scottish players will join Orange County SC on loan for the 2021 season as part of the club's partnership with Scottish Premiership side, Rangers FC.
Breen and Thomson, both 21-years-old, join Orange County after the success of their predecessors, Cammy Palmer and Daniel Finlayson, who at 19-years-old joined Orange County on loan from Rangers FC prior to the 2020 season. Both Palmer and Finlayson started in nine USL matches and Palmer notched two goals and one assist for Orange County.
"We are excited to welcome Rhys and Jack on loan from our partner club Rangers FC," said President of Soccer Operations Oliver Wyss." Just like Danny and Cammy last season, both Rhys and Jack are great professionals who will elevate our partnership on and off the field."
Breen, born in Bellshill, Scotland, was a part of the Rangers FC youth system before spending time at Partick Thistle FC and most recently, Queen of the South FC in the Scottish Championship, the second tier of Scottish Professional Football. In 2021, the center back started in 15 of 16 matches, notching one goal and one assist for Queen of the South.
"The second Rangers mentioned the opportunity to come to Orange County. It was a no-brainer," said Breen. "I was out on loan in Scotland and learned so much from it. I know by coming to Orange County I'm going to progress a lot more in my career and do well for myself and the team. I can't wait to get started in a new environment and work with my new teammates and staff. I can't wait to get out onto the pitch now and get started."
Thomson, born in Glasgow, Scotland, was a part of the Rangers FC youth system where he played along with Palmer and Finlayson before spending time at Clyde FC in Scottish League One, the third tier of Scottish Professional Football. In 2021, the midfielder played in 10 matches and tallied one assist. Thomson was also part of Scotland's U16 and U17 national teams and scored a goal in an international friendly against England's U16 squad in 2014.
"I'm buzzing to finally be over here at Orange County," said Thomson. "It's been in the process for a long time and I'm delighted it's finally come to fruition. It's a great opportunity for myself to develop and progress my career as I know the standard over here is at a very high level."
"I'm really excited to add Rhys and Jack to the team," said Head Coach Braeden Cloutier. "Both players will bring quality and depth to our talented roster and we are looking forward to seeing them contribute for us this season."
Breen and Thomson are the 12th and 13th offseason additions for Orange County SC. Orange County's 2021 USL Regular Season home opener is set for Saturday, May 22 at 7:00 p.m. PT at Championship Soccer Stadium against the Sacramento Republic live on ESPN+. The club will return to USL action on Sunday, May 16 against the Tacoma Defiance at Cheney Stadium at 12 p.m. PT live on ESPN+.
