What to What this Weekend Across the USL: Week 4
May 14, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
The action continues around the Championship this weekend with a mouth-watering matchup Saturday night
The Indomitable Club made it two wins from two matches to start the season after downing Las Vegas Lights FC on Wednesday night, 3-1.
Goals from Dariusz Formella, Tucker Bone and Jaime Villarreal ensured all three points were headed to Sacramento following the clash between Pacific Division opponents.
While Sacramento's midweek win was certainly an entertaining one, there are plenty more matchups around the USL Championship in the coming days that are certainly worth tuning in to.
Pacific Division Update
Speaking of which, the Pacific Division is almost in full swing with Orange County SC as the only club yet to play a regular season fixture just yet.
But OCSC will finally hit the pitch this Sunday on the road against Tacoma Defiance.
Last week's ESPN Game of the Week saw San Diego Loyal SC fall 1-0 to Rio Grande Valley FC Toros in Texas. Loyal will hope to bounce back tonight when the SoCal club travel to Tacoma to take on Defiance. Tacoma is fresh off a 1-1 result on the road against LA Galaxy II on Sunday.
Oakland Roots SC logged its first-ever match during Championship play - a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Rising FC in Phoenix.
Tampa Bay Rowdies vs. Phoenix Rising FC
It's the matchup USL fans were hoping to see play out in the 2020 USL Championship Final before both clubs were eventually just crowned conference champions.
The heavyweight bout will finally play out on Saturday night when the Southwestern juggernaut travels to Florida to meet Rowdies in the USL's ESPN Game of the Week that is set to kickoff at 5 p.m. PT on ESPN 2.
Just like Republic FC, Phoenix has two wins from two matches, but Rising FC has already netted seven goals on the young season.
Tampa Bay sits atop the Atlantic Division - along with Hartford Athletic - with all six points earned from two matches. Last season's Defender of the Year - Forrest Lasso - will go head-to-head all match with last season's Championship MVP and proven goalscorer for Phoenix - Solomon Asante.
Hartford Athletic v Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
In 2020, Hartford and Pittsburgh played out some memorable matches including a 1-0 win late in the campaign for Hartford that helped Athletic secure the top spot in the group over the club from the Steel City.
Now, it's the first of four meetings between the two in 2021 and the Saturday night showdown should be nothing short of entertaining.
Riverhounds SC currently sit in eighth place in the Atlantic Division with one loss from one match while Hartford is hot on the heels of Tampa Bay for the top spot.
New Mexico United vs. Austin Bold
Both New Mexico and Austin are hoping for strong campaigns and a win on Saturday for either club could swing early season momentum in their favor.
From two matches, New Mexico is 0-1-1 while Saturday's showdown will the first game of the season for Austin.
Bold made some massive moves in hopes of hunting down a playoff spot this season, most notably the addition of Sean Okoli - a former USL Golden Boot winner and MVP back in 2016. But the club didn't stop there in terms of acquiring offensive weapons, as Austin also lured forwards Jason Johnson and Stefano Pinho to the club this offseason.
