Midland RockHounds News Release

Back-to-back Corpus Christi home runs and a golden opportunity missed by the RockHounds added up to a 7-5 win for the Hooks in Sunday afternoon's series (and homestand) finale at Momentum Bank Ballpark.

Corpus broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth when J.J. Matijevic sent a three-run home run onto the grass berm in right field. Norel Gonzalez followed, working an 0-2 count to 2-2 (and fouling off two more pitches) before sending a towering fly ball over the wall in right-center. The back-to-back drives put the Hooks in front, 5-1.

The RockHounds rallied back, with Logan Davidson driving in a pair of runs on a single, trimming the Hooks lead to 5-4.

Gonzalez drove in two more runs with a seventh-inning single and the 'Hounds manufactured a run in the home half of the inning to make the score 7-5.

In the eighth, Corpus Christi reliever Kyle Serrano walked the first three batters he faced, loading the bases with no outs. But Serrano came back to get both Davidson and Jonah Bride out on strikes. With the bases still loaded and two out, Jon Olczak then came out of the bullpen to strike out Jeremy Eierman and the "golden opportunity" was gone.

Gonzalez and Matijevic accounted for all seven Hooks runs, with Gonzalez going 3-for-4 with a double a home run and four RBI.

Kibbles & Bits

While Corpus Christi rallied back to win the last two games, the RockHounds won the (six-game) series, 4-2.

The 'Hounds took 4-of-6 from both Frisco and the Hooks in the homestand and have gone 4-2 in each of three home series so far in the season (the 'Hounds took 4-of-6 from San Antonio in the opening hometand, May 11-16).

Up Next

The RockHounds now begin a stretch in which the club plays 24-of-30 games on the road, beginning with a pair of six-game series at San Antonio (June 8-13) and Amarillo (June 15-20).

The 'Hounds return home on June 22 to face the Wichita Wind Surge in a six-game set at Momentum Bank Ballpark.
