Memphis 901 FC News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis 901 FC (8-8-7, 31 points) knocked off Indy Eleven (8-12-5, 29 points) at AutoZone Park for the first time by a final tally of 1-0. The lone goal deflected off forward Kyle Murphy in the 31' to seal victory for 901 FC in the defensive match. The win boosts Memphis 901 FC to fifth in the Central Division standings and ties the club with OKC Energy FC in fourth place on points.
A slow-paced, defensive match saw Memphis 901 FC and Indy Eleven accumulate just 12 totals shots-the fewest sum for Memphis and its opponent this season. Things took a drastic turn in the 31' when Indy goalkeeper Jordan Farr failed to account for Murphy pressing toward the box. Farr's attempted clearance deflected off Murphy and rolled backward into the net to open the scoring for Memphis. Despite Memphis accumulating four yellow cards in the second half, the home side prevailed to secure all three points.
The win is a crucial one for Memphis 901 FC as it propels the club into fifth place in the Central Division while still maintaining at least a one-match advantage on all its divisional counterparts. Kyle Murphy's 14th goal now ties him for second in USL Championship play this season. Keeping the clean sheet, defender Mark Segbers had the most successful passes and touches while winning every aerial duel. With nine matches remaining, Memphis 901 FC now finds itself one win shy of tying the club record for most wins and most points in a single season.
"We didn't have our best performance tonight," Head Coach Ben Pirmann admitted. "However, we've had a lot of performances on this field in which we've played great and walked off with zero points, so it feels good to not play great and come away with three points. We fought, we stayed together, and I'm proud of the team. We've got nine matches left, and there's a long way to go, but we took a big step forward tonight."
"I did," Kyle Murphy responded when asked if he scored the 31' goal. "I'm not sure exactly where it hit me, but it did go off me and into the net. I was trying to press as much as I could, and the goalkeeper ended up coming out of the box. He hit it at me and then it rolled into the net. You have to make your own luck sometimes."
Memphis 901 FC will welcome Louisville City FC to AutoZone Park on Saturday, Sept. 25 as the club looks to extend its two-match win streak and earn its first win over Louisville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT, and the match can be seen on CW 30 Memphis and ESPN+.
