Colorado Rapids News Release

A home opener with the expansion New York F.C. and Spanish star David Villa, a Fourth of July date with Vancouver and two of the three legs of the Rocky Mountain Cup are part of the Colorado Rapids' home schedule for 2015.

Following a road opener at Philadelphia Saturday, March 7, the Rapids open the season at Dick's Sporting Goods Park Saturday, March 21 at 2 p.m. MT against the expansion New York squad, which announced earlier this year that it had signed Spanish international David Villa. Villa, 33, starred at four different Spanish clubs and has been a part of Spain's national squad from 2005 to the present, scoring 59 goals in 97 appearances. Kickoff on opening day will be at 2 p.m MT.

The Rapids, competing in what will be a much stronger Western Conference with the addition of Houston and Sporting Kansas City, will play 17 home games in a 34-game schedule (24 conference games and 10 matchups against Eastern Conference opponents). The addition of Sporting Kansas City and Houston means that the last five MLS Cup winners will all reside in the Western Conference.

The Rapids will play some teams in the Western Conference three times and others just twice. Three-game series will be played against FC Dallas, Houston, Sporting Kansas City, Real Salt Lake, Seattle and Vancouver. Two-game series will be played against LA Galaxy, Portland and San Jose. Out of conference games, besides New York City F.C., will include home games against New England, DC United, Montreal and Columbus, and road games against Orlando City, New York Red Bulls, Toronto and Chicago.

The 11th Rocky Mountain Cup, an in-season, three-match competition between Colorado and Real Salt Lake, will be contested on the three days that the clubs will meet- Sunday, June 7 in Salt Lake City, and Sunday, July 12 and Saturday, Oct. 3 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

The Rapids and the Fourth of July holiday have become synonymous with fans through the years and once again, the big holiday celebration, complete with the largest fireworks display in Colorado, will be held at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Last year the Eastern Conference included 10 teams, compared with nine in the Western Conference. With the addition of two new teams in the east - New York City F.C. and Orlando City S.C - it made sense to transfer Sporting Kansas City and Houston (which used to be in the West). With Chivas USA no longer being a part of MLS, it opened the door for two 10-team conferences for 2015. In addition, the switch will fuel the Dallas-Houston rivalry since they are in the same conference.
