Open Tryouts—Recapped

March 2, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2)
Hawaiian Islanders News Release

Hawaiian Islanders Head Coach Cal Lee and his coaching staff evaluated 29 players Sunday, February 22 in the first open tryout of the 2004 season at St. Louis High School.

The players went through testing in hopes of making the 35-man arenafootball2 league training camp list. Of the 29 new faces, 12 were invited to go to the next round—an invitational tryout dated for March.

"We saw some pretty good talent here today," said Lee. "We are going to study the numbers and make some decisions real soon."

Although the roster of hopefuls hailed mainly from Oahu, there were others who flew in for the tryout. Of the 29, players came from Kauai, California and Maryland.

"There was interest from all over the place," Lee said. "It was nice to meet these guys who were very serious in becoming a part of our team."

The players who make the cut will be invited for an invitational tryout in March.

2004 ISLANDERS' TRAINING CAMP The Hawaiian Islanders coaching staff and team are anxiously waiting the opening of training camp on Thursday, March 11 at Aloha Stadium, the Islanders official practice facility.

Twelve new faces who made it past the intense open tryout testing will join Islanders returnees in the camp. Of the 35 entering camp, Lee and staff have the difficult task of cutting the team to 21 players by the start of the season.

The Islanders play the first two games of the 2004 season on the road beginning, Saturday, March 27 against the Central Valley Coyotes. The West Division champions will return to the Neal Blaisdell Arena Saturday, April 17 against the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. Kick off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with pre-game festivities beginning at 4:00 p.m.
