EARLY SEASON SURPRISES: Besides the pair of victories by Turlock at home, there have been a handful of upsets in the early part of the season. Turlock wasn't San Diego's first shocker of the season, after the Sockers gave up five fourth quarter goals to the expansion Florida Tropics as Florida won its inaugural game 6-5 at home. San Diego needed a shootout the next night to beat Dallas, holding on for a 5-4 win after 70 minutes wasn't enough. ...
Harrisburg, which struggled last year, also got in the win column early in the season, knocking off the Milwaukee Wave. ... Meanwhile, the wave played spoilers themselves, spoiling the banner raising ceremony for the defending Ron Newman Cup Champion Baltimore Blast, knocking off the champs 4-3 at Royal Farms Arena.
LEADING AT BOTH ENDS: The league's Week 3 Player of the Week was the Kansas City Comets goaltender Stephen Paterson.
Paterson earned the honor after holding the St. Louis Ambush to only three goals in an 8-3 victory. But he also started the scoring in the game, dribbling up to just outside the attacking yellow line and letting a shot fly. It was the first goal by a goaltender in the league this season.

FRANCK TAYOU, SONORA: Last season's MVP continues his scoring ways, accounting for four goals and three assists in Sonora's win over El Paso.
IAN BENNETT, MILWAUKEE: In two games, he scored four goals (including a hat trick against Kansas City) and had two assists for the Wave.
GORDY GURSON, CEDAR RAPIDS: He assisted on the tying and winning goals as the Rapids notched their first-ever win against Milwaukee.
JOSE MARTINEZ, TURLOCK: Martinez had three blocked shots and a goal with two assists to lead the Express to their first-ever win against San Diego.
COREY KEITZ, TACOMA: The defender helped the Stars sweep a two-game weekend with seven total blocked shots.
DANNY WALTMAN, TACOMA: Waltman picked up the win in both games for the Stars. First winning a shootout against Dallas, then only allowing three goals to St. Louis. EARLY LEADERS: There are some familiar names and faces atop the MASL stats leaders through the first month of the season. Last year's Most Valuable Player, Franck Tayou of Sonora, once again is lighting up the scoreboard. He has posted a league leading 12 goals and 18 points in Sonora's four games thus far. He is a tie for second in assists, trailing only Kansas City forward Leo Gibson, who has eight assists.
Ian Bennett of Milwaukee is in a group of three tied for seventh in the league in goals scored with seven. But he's done most of his work with the man advantage, scoring four times with the Wave on the power play. There are seven players tied with two power play goals. On the other end of the special teams equation, five players have scored shorthanded so far this season. And only one player has notched more than one game-winning goal this season, that honor going to Baja's Christian Gutierrez, who has two. In goal, more familiar names top the stat lists, as Danny Waltman leads the league with four wins, while Baltimore's William Vanzela has the lowest goals against average for goalies having played more than one game (3.71), while Chris Toth of San Diego has the highest save percentage (.785) of those with more than one appearance.
