Ontario Fury Game Day Notes

December 4, 2015 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Ontario Fury News Release

Welcome to CITIZENS BUSINESS BANK ARENA for tonight's MAJOR ARENA SOCCER LEAGUE game between the Southwest Division leading LAS VEGAS LEGENDS and the ONTARIO FURY. This is the second game of a three-game home stand for the Fury, as we pay tribute to the victims, families and first responders of the tragic events in San Bernardino on Wednesday.

ABOUT THE FURY

PREVIOUS GAME: Lost 8-7 in a shootout to the San Diego Sockers.

NEXT GAME: Versus Tacoma Stars, 7 p.m. Dec. 18 at Citizens Business Bank Arena.

LAST GAME: The Fury held a 6-3 lead after three quarters, but had San Diego storm back with the next four goals to take a 7-6 lead late into the game. But with Kiley Couch out as the extra attacker, Mauricio Salles took a pass from Couch and blasted it past goaltender Chris Toth to tie the game. The 10-minute golden goal overtime failed to produce a winner, so the teams went to a best-of-three shootout where Kraig Chiles and Matt Clare scored for the Sockers. Johnny Topete and Salles each scored twice, while Sanaldo stopped 19 of 26 San Diego shots.

NEW FACE: The Fury signed former Dallas Sidekicks' forward Shaun David earlier this week. David, who is originally from Oakland, Calif., played in 31 games for the Sidekicks the last three seasons, scoring 26 goals and adding 29 assists. This will be David's second game at Citizens Business Bank Arena, as he played for the Sidekicks in Dallas' visit to Ontario two seasons ago. He registered an assist in that game. David will wear No. 24 for the Fury. Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE table.MsoNormalTable

INJURY REPORT: David's signing comes on the heels of a growing injured list for the Fury. Forward Tino Nunez injured his knee and ribs in last Saturday's game against San Diego and will miss at least tonight's game. Joey Tavernese will be out for a significant stretch after suffering a sports hernia injury during the team's road trip in Mexico. And Nelson Santana is a game-time decision for tonight's contest.

TIME OFF: After tonight's game, the Fury will be out of Major Arena Soccer League action for two weeks. Ontario will return to league action Dec. 18 against Tacoma, followed by a trip down to San Diego the next night for the third of four games against the Sockers.

BACK-TO-BACK HONORS: Fury defender Johnny Topete was an honorable mention selection for the MASL Team of the Week, which was announced Tuesday. Topete had two goals and two blocked shots in last week's loss.

SCORING LEADERS: Mauricio Salles is tied for seventh in the league in total scoring so far this season, recording seven goals and five assists in five games. Tiguinho is tied for ninth with 11 points (five goals, six assists).

STAY OUT OF THE BOX: One struggle for Ontario this season has been the penalty kill. The Fury are 18th in the league, having only killed 41.6 percent of penalties against (7 goals in 12 shorthanded chances).

HELP FOR THE HOLIDAYS: The Fury's next game will be chock full of events for fans in attendance. First, it will be the annual "CHiPs for Kids" Toy Drive at Citizens Business Bank Arena. The Mattel Toy Store will be on hand to sell toys that can be donated for the annual California Highway Patrol toy drive. Anyone donating toys, cash or sporting equipment valued at $10 or more will receive vouchers to be used at future Fury games. Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE table.MsoNormalTable

KIDS IN CHARGE: The game will also be the 2nd Annual "Kids Take Over CBBA" event, where Fury staff will be shadowed by students in grades 6 through 12 for the day, getting a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to put on a professional sporting event. And at halftime of the game, it will be the annual Mascot Soccer Game, as mascots will get their first chance to play the Fury's mascot, Stryker!

TODAY'S OPPONENT

LAS VEGAS LEGENDS

LAST GAME: Defeated the Turlock Express, 9-7

NEXT GAME: Sunday vs. Atletico Baja at Las Vegas Sports Park.

ABOUT THE LEGENDS: The Legends are 4-1, leading the newly aligned Southwest Division, which features teams whose home fields are in smaller facilities. They are led by Eric Guzman, who is third in the league in scoring with 15 points in five games (six goals, nine assists). They only have one other player in double figures in scoring, Felipe Gonzalez, who has five goals and five assists.

Tonight marks the start of a two-game weekend for the Legends, who will be playing four games over the next two weekends. After tonight's game, Las Vegas will go back home to the Las Vegas Sports Park to take on division foe Atletico Baja. Next weekend, they will travel to Northern California for games against Turlock (Dec. 11) and Sacramento (Dec. 12).

PLAYING IT CLOSE: Las Vegas leads the Southwest Division with a 4-1 record, but it hasn't been easy for the Legends. All five of the Legends' games have been decided by two goals or less, including a 5-4 overtime win over Dallas. Las Vegas is only a plus-5 in goal differential over the five games.

MILESTONE: The Legends have switched off goaltenders so far this season, splitting the games between former Fury goalie Manny Kaji and Hector Casillas since regular starter Zeke Sanchez went down with an injury in the Legends' second game of the year against Saltillo. I that game he had allowed one goal on 13 shots faced.
