Ontario Fury News Release
Monterrey Flash (1-0) vs. Ontario Fury (0-0) The Ontario Fury is Driven by Mark Christopher Chevrolet
Welcome to CITIZENS BUSINESS BANK ARENA for tonight's MAJOR ARENA SOCCER LEAGUE game between the visiting Monterrey Flash and the ONTARIO FURY. Tonight's game is the league opener for the Fury, who are kicking off their second season. Today is also the start of MILITARY APPRECIATION WEEKEND, with special ceremonies scheduled for tonight and Sunday.
ABOUT THE FURY NEXT GAME: vs. Sacramento Surge, 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9 at Citizens Business Bank Arena. It is the second game in Military Appreciation Weekend.
WELCOME BACK: Today's match is the first regular season game for the Fury's second season. The upcoming season will include a new league, new rules (a breakdown of the new rules can be found as part of the game notes package), new opponents and new broadcasting options.
MILITARY APPRECIATION: The Fury will be auctioning the jerseys off the players' backs after tonight's game to benefit Front Sight Ministry, an Ontario-based group that helps service men and women return to civilian life. The group also focuses on educating about and finding treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for those suffering the effects of the disorder.
NEW LEAGUE: The Fury start their second season as a member of the newly formed Major Arena Soccer League. The MASL was borne out of a merger of 15 teams from the Professional Arena Soccer League and six teams from the Major Indoor Soccer League (two expansion franchises - Seattle and Brownsville (Texas) -- will begin play this season).
NEW BROADCASTS: Every Major Arena Soccer League game will be available through Go Live Sports Cast this season, with most available live and viewable on computers, mobile devices and through Roku devices. All games will be archived for viewing on demand. Those games not live on Go Live will be broadcast as part of a Game of the Week package with ESPN3, which is available on the WatchESPN app. The app is free to download, but requires a participating television provider account. Pep Fernandez, the host of the Inland Sports Show on Fox Sports 1350 on Saturdays, handles play-by-play duties on all Fury home games.
NATIONAL TEAM DUTY: One member of the Fury spent part of their summer playing for the United States. Tino Nunez, Ontario's leading goal scorer last season, played for the U.S. National Beach Soccer team at a tournament in Mexico. Nunez is part of the preliminary roster for the United States Arena Soccer National Team that is beginning training for the inaugural World Cup, which will be played next spring at locations across United States, including Citizens Business Bank Arena.
ABOUT THE FLASH LAST GAME: Defeated the visiting Brownsville Barracudas, 15-6 on Oct. 26. NEXT GAME: Sunday, Nov. 9 at Las Vegas Legends, 3 p.m. at Orleans Arena.
LAST GAME RECAP: After a tight first three quarters that saw Monterrey leading 7-4, the Flash poured it on in the fourth, outscoring Brownsville 8-2 in the final 15 minutes to win the game. Three members of the Flash posted hat tricks - Alex Caceras, Guillermo Franco and Angel Curiel. Goalkeeper Jose Bontti got the win, making nine saves.
FAMILIAR FOE: One of the Flash's three-goal scorers in the opener is a name familiar to Fury fans - Alex Caceras. Caceras played for Las Vegas last season, and tormented Ontario in 2013-14. In three games against the Fury, Caceras scored 11 goals, including five in the season ending game in Las Vegas.
BIRTHDAY BOY: Forward Brayan Aguilar celebrated his 21st birthday on Wednesday, before making the trip to California.
ROAD TRIP: Tonight's game is the first stop on a three-day, two-game swing through the Pacific Division for the Flash. After tonight's game, the Flash will be traveling up the 15 Freeway for a Sunday afternoon game against the Las Vegas Legends. It will be the third game of the season for both teams.
STAYING HOME: Two players who played in Monterrey's home opener are not on the trip for the Flash. Argentian-born striker Guillermo Franco, who scored a hat trick in the season opener, and defender Edgar Martinez will not be in the lineup. Franco played internationally with clubs such as Spain's Villareal and West Ham United in the Premier League before ending his outdoor career with the Chicago Fire of MLS.
AROUND THE MASL While tonight is the Fury's first game, this is the third week of action in the league. In the two weeks of games, there have already been two games settled in extra time - both involving the Las Vegas Legends. Las Vegas won its opener at home, defeating the Turlock Express in the shootout in Week 1. Last Saturday, the Legends went to overtime again, as the San Diego Sockers rallied in the fourth quarter, and scored the winner in sudden death for a 5-4 victory over Las Vegas. ... Turlock and its new player/coach, Enrique Tovar, bounced back from the shootout loss by holding on in the fourth quarter to defeat the Sacramento Surge 11-8 at home. ... In the Southern Division, both Dallas and Browsville bounced back from opening week losses by winning their respective second games. Dallas needed a three-goal fourth quarter to come from behind to beat Wichita, 7-6. Meanwhile, Brownsville's Luis Roberto Puga scored with 1:44 remaining to give the Barracudas a 12-11 victory in their home opener. ... Out in the Eastern Division, the only game played so far featured Detroit beating Harrisburg, 8-4. As the game was played in Detroit, it was played using single point scoring rules. Syracuse will travel to Baltimore on Saturday for the first game using the mutli-point scoring system.
