Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
Oneonta, NY- The Oneonta Tigers built an 8-2 lead with the help of a four-run seventh inning and then held off an Expos rally to beat Vermont 8-5 in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening. The Tigers built a 3-0 with a run on three walks in the first off Nehomar Ochoa and unearned runs in the third and fourth innings. The Expos got those two unearned runs back with two unearned runs of their own in the sixth inning before Oneonta scored another unearned run in the sixth and four runs in the seventh for an 8-2 lead. The Expos tried to rally in the eighth on a pair of RBI fielder's choices and an infield RBI single from Brad Ditter. Vermont trailed 8-5 with two on and one out in the seventh, but Ed Clelland got Brandon Conway to hit into an inning-ending double play. The Expos got two on in the ninth on a leadoff walk and one-out single, but Juan Figueroa got Marvin Lowrance to strikeout and Steve Mortimer to popout to end the game.
Ochoa (0-1) allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts over four innings to take the loss. Oneonta starter Tom Lyons (1-0) allowed two unearned runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 5.1 innings for the win. Vermont outhit the Tigers 8-7 for the game with Edgardo Baez and Ditter picking up two hits apiece, but the Expos defense committed four errors for the second time in three games. Despite the loss, the Expos took two of the three season-opening games from the Tigers after being swept in a three-game series at Oneonta to begin both 2002 and 2003. With the two wins at Oneonta, Vermont is also halfway to the total of road wins they had in all of 2003 when the Expos were 4-34 in away games. Vermont opens the 2004 home season on Monday night when they host the Lowell Spinners at Centennial Field beginning at 7:05 p.m. Every fan in attendance will recieve an Expos magnetic schedule, while 2001 Vermont Expos pitcher and current Montreal Expos reliever Chad Bentz will be at the ballpark to take part in pre-game activities and sign autographs at the beginning of the game.
