July 22, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ- One big inning was all the Northeast League Aces needed, as they defeated the New Jersey Jackals 4-2.
After three scoreless innings, the Jackals used a two-out rally to score their first run, on a Wady Almonte RBI single.
The Aces would not let up. They would come up big with four runs against Jackals' starter Joel Bennett. A single by Chad Gambill pushed two across. Al Corbeil then reached on a fielder's choice, allowing two more to score. Through five, the Aces held a 4-1 lead over New Jersey.
New Jersey would forge a rally late. A solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth, by Kevin Grijak, would close the gap to 4-2, but it would not be enough down the stretch.
New Jersey starter Joel Bennett pitched six innings, giving up nine hits, four runs, two earned runs, while striking out seven. He was the losing pitcher.
Max Newill, of the Aces, tossed seven innings, allowing two earned runs, on seven hits, while striking out five. He picked up the victory. Angel Miranda pitched the eighth and the ninth innings, holding the Jackals at bay, and picking up the save.
For the Aces, Dalphie Correa was 3-4 with a double and a run scored.
Wilton Veras, of the Jackals, went 3-4 with two doubles and a run scored.
Also celebrated was the eighth birthday of New Jersey Jackal mascot Jack the Jackal. Mascots from all over New Jersey made their way to Yogi Berra Stadium to join in the celebration.
