One Big Hit Costs Hillcats
July 2, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
A grand slam for the Delmarva Shorebirds lifted them to a 4-1 victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Sunday afternoon.
Samuel Basallo jolted his tenth home run of the season over the right field wall in the eighth inning to put the game well in the favor of the Shorebirds. The Hillcats would bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but a double play would halt the comeback attempt.
It was a pitchers dual for most of the ballgame with only one hit allowed by Lynchburg in the first seven innings. Then the eighth, Delmarva would work the bases loaded before the grand slam by Basallo took the air out of the building.
Juan Benjamin would respond with a solo home run to open the bottom of the eighth inning and provide a bit of life. However, that would be as close as the Hillcats would come as they would bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth but could not crack the scoreboard again.
Lynchburg and Delmarva will square off one final time in this series on Monday evening. A special start time of 6:05 p.m. will kick off the Hillcats Red, White, and Boom doubleheader at Bank of the James Stadium.
