Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

STATEN ISLAND, NY - It wasn't pretty as both teams combined to leave 17 men on base, but in the end a clutch two-out, eighth-inning hit for the Renegades propelled them to a 2-1 win over Staten Island on Thursday night at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the win, Hudson Valley has won eight of their last 10 games, and have pulled to within three games of Staten Island for first-place in the McNamara Division.

The Renegades got off to a fast start in the first as they began the game with three consecutive singles to load the bases. After a popout, second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni grounded into a fielder's choice to second to score rightfielder Ryan Boldt and give Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead.

After that, both teams squandered chances to score. In the bottom of the first, Staten Island had runners at first and second with no one out after back-to-back singles to start the inning. However, Hudson Valley starter Brock Burke bore down and got a fielder's choice, strikeout and popout to end the inning. The Renegades loaded the bases with two out in the second, however a strikeout of centerfielder Garrett Whitley ended that threat.

The Renegades had a runner at second with one out in the third when Mastrobuoni line a single to center. The baserunner, third baseman Jim Haley stopped at third as the ball came through to the plate. As the ball came home, Mastrobuoni tried to go to second but was thrown out catcher to shortstop for out number two. Catcher Danny De La Calle then followed that with a flyout to center to end the inning.

The Yankees again threatened in the fourth as they got runners to first and second with one out. However, a flyout and a popup got the Renegades out of the inning.

Staten Island finally broke through in the sixth. With one out, designated hitter Timmy Robinson doubled, then scored on a soft single to left by rightfielder Ben Ruta to tie the game at one. The Yankees had a chance to take the lead in the seventh as they had runners at first and second with two out, but a strikeout by reliever Deivy Mendez got the Renegades out of the jam.

Hudson Valley retook the lead in the eighth. With one out, centerfielder Garrett Whitley walked and then stole second. It was there that first baseman Nate Lowe laced a single into rightfield to score Whitley and give the Renegades a 2-1 lead. Hudson Valley would load the bases with one out later in the inning, but a strikeout and a flyout kept the lead at one.

From there, Mendez (1-1) shut the door on the Yankees striking out five of the final seven men he faced to garner the win. For the game, Mendez went three hitless innings allowing no runs and striking out seven of 11 batters.

Reliever David Palladino (2-2) suffered the loss for Staten Island as he gave up a run on a hit and walked three in a single frame. The loss wasted a great outing by another reliever Taylor Widener, who struck out seven Renegades in only four innings on no hits.

The pitchers for each team combined on 10 walks and 23 strikeouts for the game. The Renegades had 13 punch outs. In addition to Mendez, starter Brock Burke started the night with seven strikeouts of his own in four innings.

Lowe led the Hudson Valley offensive attack with two hits in four at-bats including the game-winning RBI. Nobody had more than one hit for the Yankees.

The Renegades return home to Dutchess Stadium to take Staten Island in game two of the three-game home-and-home series. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and will be followed by a fireworks show. Right-hander Jose Alonzo (1-1, 0.47 ERA) will go for the Renegades against righty Kolton Mahoney (3-0, 0.95 ERA) for the Yankees. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
