Omaha Royals game notes

August 7, 2005 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

TODAY: The Royals and 51s meet in the series finale, which Omaha leads 2-1. Air-time is 1:15 p.m. on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com. The game will also be aired in Spanish on Radio Lobo, 97.7 FM.

LAST NIGHT: Adrian Brown cranked a pair of two-run homers and Chris Truby and Aaron Guiel added solo shots, accounting for all of the Royals' runs in a 6-4 victory. Luis Ugueto singled twice, swiped two bases and scored a couple runs. 22-year old J.P. Howell (3-1) won again, allowing just one run on six hits over 5.1 innings in his Rosenblatt Stadium debut. Santiago Ramirez gave up one run in the 9th inning, but retired three of the four batters he faced to pick up his 10th save.

ROYALS REPORT: Brown became the eighth Royal to go deep twice in a game this season, joining Matt Diaz, Ken Harvey, Justin Gemoll, Chad Santos, Cory Aldridge, Ugueto and Guiel. Brown is 7-for-12 (.583) in his series with four RBI and three runs scored, coming off the series at Tacoma where he was 0-for-18. *** Ramirez became the first Omaha reliever to post a double-digit save total in a season since Bart Evans racked up 27 saves for the Royals in 1998. *** Howell blanked Las Vegas through the first 4.1 innings last night, extending his scoreless streak to 10.1 frames since he gave up six runs in his fourth and final inning of work on July 26th at Portland. Last night's effort lowered his ERA at Triple-A by almost a full run (5.28 to 4.29). *** Diaz has gone 2-for-4 in each of the first three games of this series. Prior to last night, Diaz was hitting at a scorching .554 clip (31-56) over his previous 13 games, so after Saturday's contest that figure actually dipped to .550 (33-60) in his past 14 tilts. Cheer up Matt: your average since being sent down by KC climbed from .479 to .481 (37-77, 3 HR, 16 RBI in 18 games). *** Guiel has hit in 16 of his last 17 games, going 24-73 (.329), smacking seven homers, knocking in 16 runs and scoring 20 times himself. *** Truby, who has gone deep in back-to-back games, owns a .304 average (24-79) with six homers and 13 RBI in his last 21 starts. *** Speaking of back-to-back, when Brown and Guiel hit consecutive home runs last night it marked just the second time that has happened in 2005. Three homers in one inning for Omaha hadn't happened since August 25, 2004 (Brandon Berger, Dee Brown, Damian Jackson in the 2nd inning of a 4-1 win vs. Iowa). *** Infielder Rudy Gomez has been promoted to Omaha from Wichita. Gomez, who was a position player in one game and a mop-up pitcher in another contest for Omaha in April, hit .262 with one homer and 14 RBI in 39 games for the Wranglers. He also made three relief appearances for Wichita, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. *** Jared Price, a 23-year old catcher, has also been promoted to Omaha from High Desert. Price, who was selected by KC from the Dodgers in the minor league Rule 5 draft last December, was hitting 318 with eleven homers and 32 RBI in 30 games.

STARTERS: RH Mike Neu (1-1, 4.50) vs. RH Danny Tamayo (6-7, 5.61) Tamayo makes his 23rd start (25th appearance) of the season. In his last start, the 26-year old righty took a perfect game into the 7th inning, leading the Royals to a 6-0 win at Tacoma last Monday (8.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K). Prior to that gem, Tamayo had gone 1-2 and posted a 9.38 ERA (25 ER in 24.0 IP) over his five previous starts. Tamayo was named by KC as the Royals Minor League Pitcher of the Year. He spent most of the season with Wichita, going 12-7 with a 3.92 ERA in 25 starts, allowing only 36 walks and striking out 123 batters, in 142.1 innings. Tamayo was KC's 10th round pick in 2001 out of Notre Dame.
