Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Iowa plated three runs in the first inning Sunday and never trailed on the way to a 6-2 win over Tucson at Principal Park. The win enabled Iowa to split the four-game series with the Sidewinders.
Scott McClain provided the Cubs with some much needed offense early Sunday afternoon. After Calvin Murray singled leading off the bottom of the first, Tucson starter Chris Michalak hit Corey Patterson with a pitch. McClain then lofted a three-run homer over the center field fence for a 3-0 Iowa lead. It was McClain's 25th homer of the season and the 26th Michalak has allowed.
Tucson finally got on the board against Bobby Brownlie in the fourth inning. Carlos Quentin drew a walk and advanced on a single by Jesus Cota. With two outs, Josh Kroeger ripped a single into right field scoring both runners to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Iowa answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Richard Lewis tripled in Mike Fontenot. Lewis scored on a ground out to push Iowa's lead to 5-2.
Cody Ransom connected for a pinch-hit homer in the seventh inning off reliever Vladimir Nunez to increase the Cubs lead to 6-2.
The Sidewinders failed to score late in the game as they left two men on base in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
Tucson dropped to 58-57. Tucson resumes its 12 game road trip Monday night in Omaha. Russ Ortiz will make his second rehab start for the Sidewinders against the Royals T.B.A. The game will begin at 5:05 p.m. (Tucson time) and will air on a TAPE DELAYED BASIS at 6:00 p.m. on Cool 1450 AM.
