Union Omaha News Release
MADISON, Wisc. - Union Omaha beat Forward Madison FC 2-1 at Breese Stevens Field on Sunday night to move into first place in the USL League One table.
Omaha got exactly the start it would have wanted, opening the scoring after just seven minutes when the ball took a wicked deflection off of Madison's Tyler Allen for an own goal. But despite the Flamingos' reputation of being a second half team, Madison scored in a first half for the first time this season to level the score in the 35th minute.
Picking up the ball near the top of the box, Madison's Jake Keegan swiveled and fired a low shot which snuck inside the post. It was Keegan's third goal of the season, and the team's fifth to equalize from a losing position in its opening six games.
Union Omaha retook the lead by scoring even more quickly in the second half than it did in the first. Devin Boyce's excellent delivery from the right flank found the head of Emir Alihodzic, who nodded it in for his first goal with the club to restore Omaha's lead six minutes after halftime.
The home side piled on the pressure as the game wore on, growing more desperate for a tying goal. But the Omaha defense held firm, and los Búhos claimed the points as well as redemption for last week's defeat in Madison.
The match marked the conclusion of six consecutive away games for Omaha, which will return to Werner Park next weekend to face the New England Revolution II for its first home game since April 24. Madison will spend the week preparing to welcome rivals the Richmond Kickers to Breese Stevens Field next Saturday, the first of four meetings between the two this season.
