
Omaha Beef Sign IFL Passing Leader Derrick Bernard

RALSTON, NE - The Omaha Beef announced today that they had signed current 2019 Indoor Football League passing leader Derrick Bernard. Bernard started the first five games this season for the San Diego Strikeforce expansion team, throwing for 1102 yards, good for first in the IFL this season. Bernard is an indoor veteran, including stints with Salina of the CIF and Nebraska of the IFL. Bernard has won several league awards including Rookie of the Year and Offensive Player of the year in the Champions Indoor Football league, and a League MVP finalist on multiple occasions.
"Going into our second bye week, we felt like we were a player or two away from really being where we wanted to be on the field," General Manager Todd Walkenhorst said. "Our owner Ricky Bertz had a relationship with Derrick during their time in Salina and Dodge City, and we were able to make this happen. We are excited for the opportunity to add a player of his ability and experience at the quarterback position going forward".
"We want to do everything we can to try to bring a championship to Omaha during our 20th season," owner Ricky Bertz said. "When we had the opportunity to bring Derrick to Omaha, our coaches and entire organization were in agreement to make this move".
Quarterback Derrick Bernard was a mulit-sport athlete at Sul Ross State University, competing in both football and baseball. Bernard was a pitcher in the Ney York Mets minor league organization out of college before settling into professional indoor football. Bernard's strong arm, speed and experience will be quickly utilized in Omaha's offense. "Derrick has a lot of indoor experience at quarterback and we know he can fire the football to targets with precision," Beef Head Coach James Kerwin said. "He is the guy we have been looking for to give us some consistency at the quarterback position and put some offensive numbers on the board."
The Omaha Beef are currently on a bye week. The Beef will be back in action when the host the Texas Revolution on Saturday, April 27th at Ralston Arena. The game will be the first time the Revolution have ever visited Omaha and will be a rematch of the 2017 championship game, Champions Bowl III.
