Oklahoma defeats Iowa

Despite six extra base hits, the Iowa Cubs fell to the Oklahoma RedHawks 7-4 Friday night at Principal Park. Iowa took a 2-0 lead on a two-RBI single by Bobby Scales in the first inning. Oklahoma first baseman Nate Gold answered with a solo homerun to make it a one run game.

The RedHawks tallied three runs on three hits and took advantage of an Iowa error in fourth the inning to take a 4-2 lead. Andres Torres added his second double of the evening in the seventh inning. Torres, who finished the night 2-for-4, had two of the Cubs' six extra base hits on the night. Second basemen Eric Patterson added a triple in the second inning while shortstop Andres Blanco had a double in the fourth inning.

Luis Figueroa made it a three run game on an RBI double in the eighth and Josh Kroeger drove in a run with a triple in the ninth inning, for the 7-4 final.

Cubs starter Mark Holliman took the loss for Iowa giving up five runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work. RedHawks starter A.J. Murray earned the win holding the Cubs to just four hits in five innings of work.

Both teams meet again tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. for the second game of a four game series with right-hander Mike Burns (0-2) taking the hill for Iowa while the RedHawks send right-hander Doug Mathis (3-0) to the mound.
